STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Oklahoma State equestrian team started their season off with a bang as the hunt seat team defeated Southern Methodist and the western team topped Texas Tech in a scrimmage Saturday at Animal Science Arena in Stillwater. Overall the Cowgirls captured 14 wins on the day and swept the MVP awards.
This is the first show since the Cowgirls placed third last season at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships and brought home the Big 12 Championship title.
The hunt seat team outscored SMU 7-3 on the day. In equitation on the flats the Cowgirls won 4-1. Seniors Ally Blais and Jen McLaughlin, junior Alice White and sophomore Laura Conley all picked up wins for the Cowgirls. Blais earned the MVP for the discipline.
"The new kids held it together under pressure today," Blais said. "We have a young team this year but they showed a lot of character."
In equitation over fences, the Cowgirls outscored the Mustangs 3-2, with White picking up her second win of the day along with the MVP. Junior Erin Prutow and sophomore Sarah Brown also picked up wins for the Cowgirls in their opening match.
"Today was a good day," said associate head coach Suzanne Flaig. "There were a few nerves, but everyone did a good job getting the first show out of the way. We have several newcomers and there are a lot of questions out there, but with that are opportunities for success."
The western team defeated Texas Tech in a scrimmage format, 7-1. In horsemanship, senior Ashley Koch, juniors Margaux Tucker and Courtney Whitacre and freshman Marissa Dalton all picked up wins as the Cowgirls rolled to a 4-0 victory. Whitacre earned the MVP on the day for the Cowgirls.
