OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 71 Oklahoma State women's tennis team earned its fourth win of the year Saturday, knocking off Wichita State at the Greens Country Club, 4-3.
“Overall, it was a good match,” coach Chris Young said. “I'm glad it's behind us because it was difficult to coach against Wichita State and the athletes I've worked with before. It was a great crowd tonight in a packed house and I'm glad we came out with a win.”
The Cowgirls started the day with three big wins in doubles play, winning 8-3, 8-4 and 8-5 at No. 1, 2 and 3 doubles, respectively, to go up 1-0.
“We really made a big effort and worked hard on doubles this week,” Young said. “We spent a lot of time on doubles in practice and I'm really proud of the girls for their doubles effort in practice and in the match.”
In singles play, the Cowgirls widened their lead to 2-0 as Leyla Simmons defeated Wichita State's Lily Wakim in straight sets at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Oklahoma State held a 3-1 lead after Alisa Buslaieva was beaten by Wichita State's Lutfiana Budiharto, ranked No. 35, at No. 1 singles and Sarah Meghoufel knocked off Wichita State's Delia Damaschin, 7-5, 6-1, at the No. 4 position.
Wichita State's Stephanie Dalmacio then beat Sasha Belova at No. 2 singles to make the score 3-2, but Malika Rose fought off an early 5-3 deficit in the third set to earn the match clinching win at No. 5 singles.
With the dual match already decided, Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Wichita State's Lenore Lazaroiu finished a long, tough three-set match at the No. 3 position, with Lazaroiu coming out on top, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7).
“The match was just a great college match. Malika was down 5-3 in third set and won,” Young said. “I'm proud of her for her last couple of matches. She has showed a lot of toughness. Nataliya had a three and a half-hour singles match. I'm really proud of her for finishing strong even though she didn't get the win.”
The Cowgirls are scheduled to return to action on March 5, facing Denver in the first home dual match of 2010.
