Cowgirl Tennis Knocks off UMKC and ORU to Open 2012

TULSA, Okla. – The No. 75 Oklahoma State women's tennis team went 2-0 on its first day of the 2012 season Friday, defeating both Missouri-Kansas City and Oral Roberts, 6-1, in Tulsa.
In the first match of the day, the Cowgirls took on the Kangaroos of UMKC at Tulsa's Case Tennis Center at 9 a.m.
The day began with doubles play where OSU swept UMKC (0-1) in dominating fashion, highlighted by an 8-3 win by the freshmen duo of Mary Jeremiah and Meghan Blevins in their first collegiate dual match.
In singles play, the Cowgirls won five of their six matches. C.C. Sardinha and Malika Rose led the way at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, each defeating their opponents in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Other Cowgirl singles winners included Blevins at No. 3, Jeremiah at No. 4 and freshman spring enrollee Isabela Miro at No. 5.
Oklahoma State won every match in the dual with the exception of the No. 6 singles match, giving the Cowgirls a 6-1 victory.
"This was a good match to start the season,” coach Chris Young said. “UMKC competed very hard and pushed us today and we needed that starting off the year. I look for this team to continue to improve with each match."
In the second match, OSU took on ORU at The Grand Health and Racquet Club at 7 p.m.
The latter match was nearly identical to the earlier as the Cowgirls defeated the Golden Eagles, 6-1, after winning five singles matches and taking two of three contests on the doubles courts.
The tandem of Blevins and Jeremiah, as well as Sardinha and Miro, earned the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, 9-7 and 8-3, respectively.
Oklahoma State won at Nos. 1-5 singles, all in straight sets, with Rose at the No. 1 spot this time.
OSU returns to the court Jan. 28 when they take on Wichita State in Tulsa at 1 p.m.
