Cowgirl Tennis Drops Bedlam Match in Norman

Oklahoma State's women's tennis team was upset by 39th-ranked Oklahoma, 4-3, in a nonconference match in Norman on Friday.
The Cowgirls (10-4, 2-1 Big 12) started off the match by taking the doubles point. Oklahoma State swept the Sooners on all three doubles courts. The streaking duo of Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana provided the highlight of doubles play and the match when the tandem upset the nation's 15th-ranked doubles team made up of Oklahoma's Hermon Brhane and Whitney Ritchie.
The Sooners would storm back in singles play, rattling off four straight wins to clinch the match early. Brhane defeated Rose on one, 6-1, 7-5. Oklahoma scored another point shortly after when Whitney Wofford beat freshman Cowgirl Maria Alvarez on four, 6-3, 6-1. Meghan Blevins and C.C. Sardinha both managed to take their matches to three sets, but each was outmatched in the third set.
After the match was clinched for Oklahoma, Oklahoma State notched two more points on courts five and six. Cowgirl Karyn Guttormsen grabbed the three-set victory on six, defeating Emma Devine 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. Kanyapat Narattana defeated Abbi Melrose, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, on five to finish off the match.
“It was a great match,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “I'm proud of the way our girls competed. We will regroup and be ready for Texas Tech on Sunday.”
The Cowgirls will be back in action this Sunday when they travel to Lubbock, Texas for a showdown with No. 18 Texas Tech.
