Oklahoma State's fourth-ranked equestrian team opened its 2013-14 season Saturday, falling to No. 5 Kansas State, 11-9, in a hard fought battle at Timbercreek Stables in Manhattan, Kan.

The western team opened defense of its national title with a 6-4 victory. In a rematch of last season's Big 12 Championship and NCEA Western Championship matchups, the Cowgirls (0-1) won horsemanship, defeating the Wildcats (2-1) 4-1. Junior All-American, Katy Krshka picked up where she left off last season, defeating Danielle Kemper 74-71 and capturing Most Outstanding Performer.

Also in horsemanship, fellow All-American Lindsey McMullen defeated Rachel Wetherell, 72.5-69.5, and sophomore Ty Paris, picked up her first collegiate victory, defeating Chayna DeNicolo 72-68.5.

In reining, OSU fought hard, falling 3-2. Sophomore Erin Willoughby defeated Kelly Bovaird by one point (62.5-61.5) and sophomore Justine Peters took care of Savannah Smith, 71.5-67 .

The hunter seat team fell to KSU 7-3. In equitation, junior Allison Joyce and senior Ali Rose brought home victories for the Cowgirls. Joyce pulled out a thrilling win against Jacquelyn Bogstad, winning 69-68 and Rose defeated Rachel Webter, 73-65. In equitation over fences, senior Samantha Harrison defeated Catherine Avolese by an 86-76 count.

The Cowgirls will return to the arena after a month off when they travel to Waco, Texas to take on the Baylor Bears on Oct. 26.
