STILLWATER -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team knocked off the 49th-ranked Wichita State Shockers, 6-1, at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
“I think we worked hard this week and really prepared well for this match,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “I thought that we faced a lot of the same challenges in this match that we faced throughout the year with a lot of close matches, and the girls did a great job of stepping up and executing. A lot of it was based on the preparation we had this week.”
The Cowgirls (5-5) picked up the doubles point with wins on one and three. Karyn Guttormsen and Katarina Adamovic were the first Cowgirls to strike, defeating Wichita State's Abby Stevens and Julia Schiller on three, 8-2.
Kanyapat Narattana and Viktoriya Lushkova clinched the doubles point for OSU. The duo picked up its seventh win of the season when it downed Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova, 8-3, on one.
In singles, Adamovic toppled Veronika Blaskova, 6-1, 6-2, on four to stretch the Cowgirl lead to two.
Narattana posted another straight-set win on three. The senior upended Wichita State's Lucia Kovalova, 6-4, 6-4, to put the Cowgirls a point away from clinching their fifth victory of the season.
Freshman Carla Tur Mari outlasted Wichita State's Abby Stevens, 6-2, in the third set to pick up the match's fourth point and seal the victory for the Cowgirls.
“Last weekend was a tough weekend for everyone because we expected to win, but we lost,” Tur Mari said. “We practiced so hard this week and we were ready for this match. All of us were ready and we played very well.
After the match was clinched, Viktoriya Lushkova notched her eighth-straight win with a three-set victory on one. After falling down to Montse Blasco Fernandez, 5-0, on six in the match's first set, Karyn Guttormsen took seven of the next eight games to take the set. Guttormsen eventually defeated Blasco Fernandez, 7-6(3), 6-3.
Freshman Megan McCray lost a hard-fought battle on two to Rebecca Pedrazzi. Pedrazzi defeated McCray in a 7-5 tiebreaker that decided the third-set and the match, giving the Shockers their only point of the afternoon.
The Cowgirls return to the Greenwood Tennis Center next Sunday, March 9, when they host No. 16 Oklahoma and College MatchDay at 1 p.m.
