STILLWATER -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team picked up its first conference win of the season on Friday when it defeated 49th-ranked TCU, 5-2, at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
“Every match in the Big 12 is going to be tough,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “TCU had a good win last week against Texas, so we knew they were going to be a talented team coming in here. I didn't think that our energy level in doubles was very good, but we were able to pull through.”
The Cowgirls (7-5, 1-0 Big 12) sealed the doubles point with a pair of wins on one and two. The 37th-ranked tandem of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kanyapat Narattana opened things up for OSU in doubles, knocking off Seda Arantekin and Stefanie Tan of TCU, 8-4, on one. Carla Tur Mari and Maria Alvarez clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Tatum Nowlin and Sofiko Kadzhaya on two.
In singles, Viktoriya Lushkova led the Cowgirls with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over 53rd-ranked Stefanie Tan on one to expand the OSU lead to two. The triumph was the freshman's third win over a ranked opponent this season.
“Viktoriya played on a different level today in singles,” Young said. “Tan was an All-American last year, but Viktoriya just played on a different level. When she plays like that, she can beat anybody in the country. It's a good example for the rest of our girls.”
Junior Karyn Guttormsen was the next Cowgirl in the win column. Guttormsen notched a straight-set win over TCU's Tatum Nowlin on six to put the Cowgirls a point away from the victory.
The Cowgirls clinched the match when senior Kanyapat Narattana defeated Seda Arantekin, 6-1, 6-3, on three.
After the triumph was sealed in favor of the Cowgirls, freshman Megan McCray knocked off Simona Parajova of TCU, 7-6(3), 6-2, 1-0(10-7), in a tight match to pick up the fifth and final point for OSU.
“I thought that our three girls that got us quick wins in singles made a difference,” Young said. “I'm also really proud of Megan (McCray) for getting that win on two. She's had some close losses and she stepped up against one of the better players in the conference today.”
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Sunday, March 23, when they host 33rd-ranked Texas Tech at the Greenwood Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
