STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State's women's tennis squad opened conference play with a 4–0 sweep against West Virginia inside the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center on Saturday.
"I think we played with good energy today, that's something that we talked about as an improvement we needed to make," OSU head coach Chris Young said. "It's a good way to start Big 12 play."
The Cowgirls (12-4; 1-0 Big 12) continued to dominate the doubles point. Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic began the day with a win at the No. 3 position, 6-1 against Habiba Shaker and Abigail Rosiello.
The Pokes secured the doubles point on court two with a win by Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari, as they defeated Yvon Martinez and Lyn Yuen Choo, 6-3.
The Cowgirls, ranked No. 16, wasted no time putting away the Mountaineers in singles. All three Cowgirl victories came in straight sets.
"Each girl took their match seriously and we know West Virginia is an improved team," Young said. "We have goals of competing for the Big 12 championship this year and for us to get off to a good start was important."
Tur Mari gave the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead while playing at the No. 4 position for the first time this season. The junior defeated Choo, 6-1, 6-1, to earn her eighth win of the spring season.
Katarina Stresnakova gave the Cowgirls a commanding 3-0 lead with her win at the No. 5 slot. The freshman took down Martinez, 6-1, 6-2, to also pick up her eighth win of the season.
Alvarez completed the sweep for the Cowgirls on court six. The senior pulled away from Rosiello midway through the first set and never looked back on her way to a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
OSU returns to action on Sunday as Iowa State visits Stillwater for a match inside the Greenwood Tennis Center at noon.
