Katie Jones Clinches Final Point in Season Opener; Cowgirls Win in Delaware

DOVER, Del. – The Oklahoma State Equestrian team won its season opener against Delaware State on Saturday, 11-8. It marks the Cowgirl's third straight season-opening win.
Junior Equitation over Fences rider Katie Jones clinched the match for the Cowgirls. With three riders left in the competition and the score at 9-7, Jones' 83 pushed her just past DSU's Emily Nelson who rode for an 82. Jones' score gave the Cowgirls a 10-7 advantage with two riders left.
Oklahoma State received all four of the match's Most Outstanding Performer honors. Junior Libby Collins and redshirt freshman Alexa Beaty were honored as MOP's in Horsemanship and Reining, respectively. 2016 NCEA All-American Jorden Davis was honored as MOP in Equitation over Fences. Davis had the highest score of the day with an 85. Senior Maggie Drysch was the final Cowgirl to be honored as an MOP winning her Equitation on the Flat matchup, 75-58.
"I am so proud of the four girls that got the MOP's today," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "There were several great rides and it's great to see the judges recognizing them for their efforts."
Oklahoma State added new faces to its lineup today including freshmen Kayla Lott and Hannah Mitchell. Lott competed in both Equitation on the Flat and Equitation over Fences, winning Equitation on the Flat 58-54.
Redshirt sophomore Maddie Bender, Auburn transfer Sarah Miller and Beaty also competed today for the Cowgirls. Miller won her Horsemanship matchup and Beaty won her Reining event.
"We had some new faces competing for us today," Sanchez said. "I'm excited for our future because of this new talent competing along side our returners." Sanchez said.
2016 NCEA All-American Ebba Lange made a statement in her Reining event with a 71.5, the highest score in Reining.
Junior Carly Barrick started the season out with two wins in both Equitation events as well.
Oklahoma State will be back in action on Oct. 15 against SMU in Dallas, Texas.
