Cowgirls Fall to Ole Miss in ITA Kickoff Weekend Finals
January 27, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The 15th-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team fell to No. 23 Ole Miss Saturday afternoon inside the Greenwood Tennis Center in the 2018 ITA Kickoff Weekend Stillwater Regional championship match. The Rebels snapped the Cowgirls home match win streak at 38 dating back to March of 2015.
The Cowgirls found themselves down early when Ole Miss took the doubles point to start the match up, 1-0, with wins on courts one and three.Â
Â
Megan McCray would even things out at the start of singles play, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, over No. 81 Natalie Suk. McCray is now 4-0 on the year in five matches.Â
Â
"She's been great," head coach Chris Young said. "Her and Katie are by far playing the best of anybody we have on the team. She's coming in and she's doing great. We're very fortunate to have her."
Â
"I've been working really hard on my fitness," McCray said. "That's definitely really helpful. I don't get tired in the second set of a match."
Â
McCray's match, however, would be the Cowgirls lone win of the afternoon. Â
Â
No. 50 Arianna Hartono defeated senior Vladica Babic on court one to retake the Rebel's lead, 2-1. Shir Hornung then fell to Tereza Janatova, 6-3, 6-1, to push Ole Miss' lead to 3-1.
Â
"We just didn't bring good energy today and it's disappointing," Young said. "That's something that we've always done really well. I thought we just dug ourselves too deep of a hole to work ourselves out of there at the end."Â
Â
The match ended when No. 95 Tea Jandric ousted Sofia Blanco on court five, 6-2, 6-2.Â
Â
"Coming off last night, you wanted to pick up right where you left off and it just didn't happen," Young said.
Â
Oklahoma State will host Arkansas for its next match at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 4, at the Greenwood Tennis Center.Â
