Cowgirls Sweep Shockers to Open Weekend
March 30, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The 13th-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team got back on track Friday afternoon in its first of two matches this weekend, defeating No. 35 Wichita State in a 4-0 sweep at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Winners of nine of their last 10, the Cowgirls (13-2, 3-1 Big 12) used wins from their top two doubles teams to claim their ninth doubles point of the season. OSU clinched the win in a shutout, thanks to straight-set wins from Marina Guinart, Sofia Blanco and Vladica Babic. The team stretched its record to 9-0 this season when winning the doubles point.
"Overall, the team responded really well today," head coach Chris Young said. "After our first loss in two months, the girls came back (and won tonight). Wichita State is a great team. They compete really well, and I thought this was a great home win for us."
After Wichita State struck first in doubles by winning on court three, Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova responded on court two in a 6-3 win over Ting-Ya Hsu and Giulia Guidetti.
Babic and Blanco came up with the doubles clincher on court won in a 7-5 decision over Gatima Bizhukova and Marta Bellucco in the top singles position. The Cowgirl tandem has been impressive of late, winning five-straight and eight of 10 dual matches to push their overall record to 19-7.
"(Me and Sofi are playing) great," Babic said. "We split for a little bit and played with different people, and I think that gave us confidence. She has so much confidence right now and she is playing great tennis, so I'm really glad that we are playing together and that it's working."
In singles, the Cowgirls took four of six first sets and were able to finish out the match without allowing the Shockers to get on the board.
Guinart won her 10th-straight match in a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Marta Bellucco at No. 4. The Cowgirl junior started out in a 2-0 hole to open the match, but would win six of seven to take the first before outlasting Bellucco in the second to lock up her 19th win of the season.
Sofia Blanco continued her strong play of late in a 6-3, 6-2 tally over Wichita State's Gabriela Porubin in a match that the Cowgirl controlled from start to finish. Blanco has won three-straight and four of her last five, including a big win last week at Baylor to help set the Cowgirls up for the win, and moved her record this season to 12-6 overall.
"Sofi is playing really well," Young said. "She is probably our most improved player over the last month of the season and that's allowed us to put her back at No. 1 doubles and for her to really be a strength. Now we're really strong in singles with her and I thought Shir (Hornung) had a really good match today. I'm just really proud of Sofi for her continued improvement."
After a 6-0 shutout first set win over 68th-ranked Shocker Fatima Bizhukova, Babic trailed for much of the second set before coming back and finishing off the 6-0, 7-5 victory to clinch the team triumph for the Pokes. The win was the Cowgirl's 20th of the season, marking the fourth 20-win campaign of her career.
"I felt really good in the first set," Babic said. "In the second set, she started playing well and I started to panic a little bit. Once you win 6-0 in the first set, you get really confident and then when a few points don't go your way I freaked out a little bit. She's a good player and it wasn't easy to play her, but I knew what I had to do. I just had to stick to my plan and execute."
The Cowgirls won't have to wait long before hitting the courts again, as they'll travel to Norman, Okla., on Saturday for a Bedlam matchup against Oklahoma at noon. Fans can watch the match live on Fox Sports Oklahoma.
