Cowgirls Come up Short Against Gamecocks
February 10, 2019 | Cowgirl Tennis
SEATTLE, Wash.– Oklahoma State women's tennis dropped a close dual to No. 15 South Carolina, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon following Friday's postponement of play at the ITA Women's Indoor Team Championships.
The ninth-ranked Cowgirls took three of six singles matches into a third set but ultimately came up short after Marina Guinart secured the only point in individual play, defeating Megan Davies, 6-4, 6-2, to knot the contest at a point apiece.
"Credit to South Carolina for setting the tone with doubles," said coach Chris Young. "We were able to regroup and had a great opportunity to get four points in singles but just came up a little short."
Katarina Stresnakova and Catherine Gulihur fell to Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Mia Horvit, 6-2, just before Tamara Arnold and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat nabbed the Cowgirls' lone doubles win, 6-2, over Megan Davies and Kennedy Wicker. Gamarra Martins and Horvit are the fourth-ranked doubles tandem in the country. Guinart and Lisa Marie Rioux lost a 6-3 dual to Silvia Chinellato and Paige Cline, surrendering the first point to the Gamecocks.
No. 16 Gamarra Martins bested Stresnakova in two sets just after Thamchaiwat lost her bout to No. 38 Cline, 6-3, 6-1. On court 5, after falling behind in the first, Gulihur won a tiebreaker in the second set over Chinellato, 7-6(7), but ultimately the bout went unfinished.
In three, Rioux dropped a hard-fought competition to No. 79 Horvit, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6. Sophomore Arnold also forced a third set and had a lead over South Carolina's Kennedy Wick in the third set when the match ended.
"Fortunately, we have a break in the schedule now that will allow us to get healthy and improve for the second half of the year," Young said.
The Cowgirls have next weekend off and won't return to action until Feb. 22, at the Blue-Gray Championships in Montgomery, Ala.
