STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team (20-7; 8-1 Big 12) shut out the Bears of Central Arkansas, 4-0, in the first round of NCAA Regional action at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Friday evening. The win pushes the Cowgirls to 20 wins, marking the fifth-consecutive season they've reached the milestone.
Â
"I thought Central Arkansas came out and played really well," coach Chris Young said. "We knew they would be a tough opponent, and they played really good in doubles. They are very well coached. They made the right moves at the right times, and that forced us to execute. We needed that after not having a match for two weeks. You get a little bit of a lay off and you have to come in and work through some things."
Â
Lisa Marie Rioux clinched the dual for the Cowgirls in a 6-1, 6-4 match over UCA's Fuka Nonoyama, marking her sixth-consecutive singles victory. The junior has won seven of her last 10 bouts with two coming against ranked opponents.Â
Â
Also picking up a singles victory for OSU was No. 94 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat, who defeated Yada Vasupongchai, 6-1, 6-3, giving the Pokes their first win of the day in singles. Senior Sofia Blanco bested Mei Ishimura, 6-2, 6-3, notching her 17th individual win on the year.Â
Â
OSU took the doubles point with wins from tandem Katarina Stresnakova and Marina Guinart and the 15th win of the year for doubles partners Tamara Arnold and Thamchaiwat.Â
Â
The Cowgirls return to the Greenwood Tennis Center at 2 p.m. Saturday for second-round play against the No. 19 Miami Hurricanes. The Canes defeated No. 33 Washington State earlier in the day to advance.Â
