Cowgirl Tennis Ends Impressive Opening Weekend With Two More Wins
January 12, 2020 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The No. 11 Oklahoma State women's tennis team played its second consecutive day of double-header matches in Stillwater against Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts on Sunday. The Cowgirls came out victorious in both matches, leading them to a perfect 4-0 record to start the season.
Sunday's first match against Central Arkansas began at 2 p.m. and was a rematch of the first round of the 2019 NCAA Championships, and just like last year, the Cowgirls would come out victorious. OSU won the doubles point, which started with Bunyawi Thamchaiwat and Lenka Stara defeating Yada Vasupongchai and Maja Gledic, 6-1. It was the freshman tandem of Alana Wolfberg and Dariya Detkovskaya that would earn OSU the doubles point after it defeated Mei Ishimura and Paulina Engback, 6-4.
It was the freshmen again that would step up to win Oklahoma State the singles point starting with Alana Wolfberg, who defeated Jaeun Lee, 6-0, 6-1. Detkovskaya played her first singles match of the season, and she landed OSU the third point of the match by defeating Mei Ishimura, 6-3, 6-0. The match-winning point came from the newest Cowgirl, Lenka Stara, who took down Paulina Engback, 6-0, 6-1.
"The reason we're playing four matches this weekend for the freshman to get more confident. You're starting to see it. I think Alana [Wolfberg] looked a lot more confident today than she did yesterday, so did Lenka [Stara]," said head coach Chris Young. "Then for Dariya [Detkovskaya], we got her in the mix in singles after keeping her focused on doubles yesterday; she started coming on. This is all about the maturation for them."
Young opted not to play the doubles team of No. 17 Rioux and Miyamoto in the match against Oral Roberts. Thamchaiwat and Stara played in the one slot for the Cowgirls and defeated Oleksandra Nahurska and Ivana Babic, 6-3. Wolfberg and Detkovskaya, playing in the second slot, defeated Regan Miley and Aliksandra Lebedeva 7-5 to give the Cowgirls the doubles point.
The Cowgirls continued their impressive play with three consecutive singles points won over the Golden Eagles. No. 16 Rioux defeated Nahurska first in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Detkovskaya finished shortly after and won 6-0, 6-1 over Sengupta. The match-clinching victory came via No. 92 Ayumi Miyamoto, who won her match, 6-1, 6-1 over Lebedeva.
The Cowgirls will now travel to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the Freeman Memorial Invitational on Jan. 17. OSU will return to Stillwater on Jan. 25 when it takes on San Diego at 3 p.m. in the Greenwood Tennis Center.
