Cowgirl Equestrian Drops Season Opener At TCU

FORT, WORTH, Texas — Oklahoma State's second-ranked equestrian team was defeated by fourth-ranked TCU, 14-5, on Sunday in the opening meet of the season for OSU at Diamond Creek Ranch.
The meet began with Equitation over Fences and Reining coinciding. In Fences, the Cowgirls were defeated, 4-1, and lost, 3-1, in Reining.
Senior Katie Schell began her season by earning MOP honors defeating TCU's Sydnie Young, 88-85.5, in Fences to earn the Cowgirls' first point of the day. Abigail Brayman was narrowly defeated, 85-84, by TCU's Ashleigh Sculls. Sydnie Ziegler lost, 86-84, against Alex Beneson, while Emma Pacyna was defeated by Isabella Baxter, 86.5-83. Sydney North was beaten by Horned Frog Raegan Rast, 87-83.
In Reining, Stephanie Helsen delivered the Cowgirls' lone point in the event by defeating TCU's Bella Andrews, 69.5-66.5. Molly Mitchell and TCU's Sarah Armenta each scored a 69.5, meaning no team point was awarded. Hannah Lovrien was defeated by Horned Frog Mattie Dukes, 71-69. Kinsey Jones was beaten, 68.5-66, by TCU's Shea Graham and Stephanie Gripp lost to TCU's Giorgia Medows, 69.5-66.5.
The second half of the meet started with Equitation on the Flat and Horsemanship occurring simultaneously. The Cowgirls were unable to find any momentum in the second half of the meet.
OSU dropped Equation on the Flat, 4-1, despite Katie Schell picking up her second point of the day by beating TCU's Wynne Weatherly, 78-74. Katie Pelzel and Abigail Brayman were defeated by thin margins. Pelzel fell to TCU's Ashleigh Scully, 84-82, and Brayman lost to Sydnie Young, 79-78. Horned Frog Jacey Albaugh defeated Hannah Coleman, 92-80, and Hope King lost, 85-79, to TCU's Alex Benson.
In Horsemanship, the Cowgirls were defeated, 4-1. The reigning Big 12 Horsemanship Rider of the Year, Harley Huff, picked up a season-opening win defeating TCU's Shea Graham, 76-71. Jojo Roberson picked up a point for OSU, defeating Horned Frog Mattie Dukes, 76.5-73, to earn MOP honors.
Sydnee Gemar was beaten by TCU's Giorgia Medows, 75-71.5, and Cassidy Watters was defeated, 76.5-66.5. Natalie Vargo lost, 71-64.5, to Anna Hauter.
OSU returns to action on Friday at 10 a.m. against Baylor in Waco, Texas.
