OSU Equestrian Defeats Baylor In Big 12 Championships Semifinal

FORT WORTH, Texas - No. 1 Oklahoma State equestrian defeated No. 6 Baylor, 10-9, in a nail biter on Friday to earn a spot in the Big 12 Championship meet tomorrow at Diamond Creek Ranch. It marks the sixth-straight year the Cowgirls have advanced to the final round.Â

"I am so proud of the mental toughness this team shows week in and week out and today was no different," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "Baylor is very good, and their coaches always have them prepared, it was a hard fought battle today. We are looking forward to competing against TCU in the finals tomorrow."

The first discipline of the day was Fences, where the Bears took an early 3-2 lead. Baylor's Savannah Hemby, Madeline Vorhies, and Emma Fletcher got an early start and beat their respective opponents, 165-154, 160-154, and 156-142. OSU's Sydnie Ziegler countered with a 169-162 win against Madison Mitchell. Riley Hogan earned a career-high, 176-161, to complete the event.Â

Next, OSU won Reining, 3-1. The only Bear point came after Andie Pratt bested her opponent, 139-129.5. Molly Mitchell countered with a score of 145.5 to beat Jenna Meimerstrof, and Hannah Lovrien secured her fourth victory of the year, 142-135.5. Cowgirl captain JoJo Roberson secured a win, 151.5-146.5, and Quincee Clark tied her opponent with a pair of 142.5's.Â

At the beginning of the second half, the Cowgirls struggled to keep their momentum in Flat. The lone Cowgirl point came from captain Katie Pelzel when she beat Dominika Silvestri, 169.5-151. Brayman lost to Fletcher, 161.5-145, and Baylor's Caroline Fuller bested Hannah Coleman, 156.5-153.5. King dropped her point to Vorhies, 167-162, and Ziegler was defeated by her opponent, 152-136.Â

The Bears led the Cowgirls, 8-6, heading into Horsemanship. Natalie Vargo secured an OSU point to beat Elsie Naruszewicz, 151-146.5. After Isabella Rosa beat Caroline Nielson, 142.5-138.5, Baylor needed one win out of the next three rides to secure a victory. Â

Claire McDowall picked up a point against Marley Mainwaring, 151-145.5, and Maddie Fussell followed suit with her ride and bested Gabrielle Marty, 147.5-131.5. Tied at 9-9, Roberson continued her successful day and won her ride, 146.5-151.5, to secure the Cowgirl victory.Â

OSU will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against No. 4 TCU in the Big 12 Championship meet.Â
