Cowgirls Dominate Jayhawks in Conference Opener, 4-1

STILLWATER- The No. 1 ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team claimed victory in its conference opener, defeating Kansas, 4-1, Friday night at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater.

The win improves the Cowgirls to 12-0 on the year, their best start to a season since 1981, and 1-0 in conference play. Kansas fell to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

To open doubles play, Cowgirls Ayumi Miyamoto and Raquel Gonzalez fell to Heike Janse Van Vuuren and Jocelyn Massey to open the match, 6-2.

Needing courts one and three to claim the doubles point, the No. 6 pairing of Anastasiya Komar and Ange Oby Kajuru evened things up, defeating Gracie Mulville and Kyoka Kubo, 6-4. On court three, Cowgirls Safiya Carrington and Kristina Novak secured the point, beating Maria Titova and Jasmine Adams in comeback fashion, 7-6 (7-4).

To open singles, Oklahoma State's No. 84 Miyamoto bested Massey 6-2, 6-2. Court three followed suit as No. 66 Lucia Peyre took down Janse Van Vuuren, 7-5, 6-2.

Kansas was able to steal a point back on court four as Kyoka Kubo took a three-set match over No. 56 Carrington, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

With the Cowgirls in need of one point to wrap up the night, Gonzalez downed Adams in a gritty three-set match, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3.

Courts one and two both went unfinished on the night, as No. 9 Komar led Mulville, 6-4, 4-6, 4-3, while No. 4 Kajuru trailed Titova, 6-3, 2-6, 2-3.
