Cowgirl Golf in second place after stellar start to NCAA Championship
May 16, 2025 | Cowgirl Golf
The Cowgirls took advantage of favorable morning conditions at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, posting the fourth lowest NCAA Championship round in program history.
Junior Grace Kilcrease led the way with a 3-under, 69 to grab a share of fifth place on the individual leaderboard, and teammates Marta Silchenko and Ellie Bushnell are tied for 17that 1-under.
OSU sits two strokes behind first-place Vanderbilt (-6) in the team standings and is four shots up on the next wave of contenders, which includes Arizona State, Oregon, Texas and Florida (all at even par).
The field of 30 teams will be cut to 15 after Sunday's third round and to eight following Monday's fourth round, at which point an individual national champion will be crowned. The eight remaining teams will compete head-to-head Tuesday and Wednesday in bracketed match play to determine the team title.
"It was good to see them get off to a solid start today," OSU head coach Greg Robertson said. "They made quite few birdies early that helped get some momentum going. With the afternoon start tomorrow, we'll have to adjust to the course conditions with firmer and faster greens, along with some wind. The teams that are able do that are the teams will have the most success as the week goes on."
OSU posted the best par-3 and par-5 scoring averages among the field at 2.90 (-2) and 4.65 (-7) respectively.
Kilcrease – the nation's 33rd ranked golfer -- posted four of her five birdies (second most among the field of 156 golfers) on the front nine then went bogey-free on the back side. She's two strokes behind the leader, Tennessee's Bailey Davis (-5).
Silchenko and Bushnell, the only holdovers from last year's OSU lineup, are just four shots off the pace at 1-under par.
Freshmen Summer Lee and Tarapath Panya shot 1-over and 2-over respectively to end the day in 46th and 64th.
The Cowgirls will be move to the afternoon session on Saturday with tee times starting at 2:12 p.m. CT.
