Chris Perry is coming off his seventh season as assistant coach at Oklahoma State after stepping into the position in the summer of 2017. Prior to the promotion, he served two seasons as a volunteer assistant and another as a club coach for the Pokes.
Â
Since Perry joined the staff as a volunteer in 2016, OSU has racked up a 119-17 dual record, including perfect seasons in 2019 and 2021. Cowboy wrestlers have claimed 42 All-America honors with another 37 individual conference championships. He has helped guide his alma mater to six Big 12 team titles and three Cowboy wrestlers to NCAA titles. Perry also saw standout Daton Fix excel on the international stage with a bronze medal at the 2018 Junior World Championships, an appearance at the 2019 World Championships and a silver medal at Worlds in 2021. He also played a part in Dean Heil’s back-to-back national championships, as well as titles from Alex Dieringer and AJ Ferrari.
Â
Perry’s most recent season saw Daton Fix and Dustin Plott each make the NCAA finals, while 165-pounder Izzak Olejnik finished fifth to give the Cowboys their most placers since 2021. Fix’s final season in Stillwater included becoming the Big 12’s first five-time champion and first five-time All-American in program history. Oklahoma State excelled in dual competition throughout the regular season, winning its first 14 duals to conclude the year with a 14-1 record. Three of those victories came against top-five ranked teams, as the Cowboys went on an outstanding run of defeating a ranked opponent in 10 straight duals and ultimately leading the country with a dozen ranked victories. The Cowboys also set a program record with a season attendance average of 5,871 fans and hosted their first sellout at Gallagher-Iba Arena since 2019. The Pokes would go on to finish second at the Big 12 Championships with 141.5 points, most by a runner-up in league history.
Â
From 2019 to 2021, Perry and the Cowboys averaged nearly six All-Americans per year while bringing home the Big 12 championship in all three seasons.
Â
In 2017, Perry helped coach Heil to his second NCAA title and eight Cowboys secure All-America honors to tie a school record. The season also saw eight Cowboys earn Big 12 individual titles, a conference record, en route to the team title.
Â
In his first season on staff, Perry saw Alex Dieringer claim his third NCAA individual title, Dean Heil win his first national championship and four more Cowboys earn podium finishes. The OSU staff also guided seven Pokes to Big 12 titles and a team conference championship.
Â
A native of Stillwater, Okla., Perry won back-to-back NCAA championships at 174 pounds in 2013 and 2014. He produced a dominant 122-11 career record, a win total that still stands top-15 in program history, with 56 bonus-point wins. He is also one of 10 four-time conference champions in program history, a three-time All-American and the Big 12 Championship’s Outstanding Wrestler in 2014.
Â
Following his time in Stillwater, Perry found success on the freestyle circuit with a silver medal at the 2014 University World Championships, a third-place finish at the World Team Trials that same year and a trio of bronze medals at international tournaments from 2013 to 2017.
Chris’ father, Mark, also had an outstanding career for the Cowboys from 1981-85, surpassing 100 total victories and earning All-America honors twice.
Â
Perry graduated with a degree in education in 2014.
