UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Oklahoma State avenged an early season tie and defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 19-13 Sunday afternoon in the third-place match of the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals at the Bryce Jordan Center.
The fourth-ranked Cowboys, who beat No. 7 Nebraska 27-15 in the consolation finals earlier in the day, improved to 9-2-1 on the season.
"It was good to see our team come back and get some good matches, today," said head coach John Smith. "We have got to get some people motivated and in shape. We just didn't finish strong and I'm disappointed in that."
"I think our expectations as a team have risen over the last couple of months. It was good to see us come out with a victory over a good Nebraska team and then OU."
This was the first meeting between the Cowboys and Sooners on a neutral mat. OSU owns a 106-24-9 all-time series advantage.
Second-ranked Mark Mu-oz wrapped up third-place for the Pokes with an 8-4 decision over Oklahoma's fifth-ranked Orville Palmer. The win gave OSU a 19-10 lead before Brent Boeshans upset OSU's Dave Anderton 3-1 in the final match.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with decisions from Jeff Ragan (125) and Charles Walker (133), before No. 4 Michael Lightner decisioned No. 3 Jamill Kelly, 5-1.
The Cowboys' Daniel Cormier finished off an outstanding weekend with a major decision over OU's ninth-ranked Tom Grossman, 11-3.
Cormier pinned Rider's No. 16 Shawn Scannell in 1:54 in the round of 16 and decisioned Minnesota's No. 2 Brandon Eggum, 3-1, in overtime of the semifinals.
Reggie Wright and Ty Wilcox also picked up decisions for the Cowboys in the win.
Against Nebraska, Anderton pinned Matt Zutavern in 1:14 and Corimer earned a forfeit as the Cowboys drilled the seventh-ranked Huskers 27-15.
The Cowboys will return to the mat on Friday, Jan. 28, as the second-ranked Iowa State Cyclones visit Stillwater for a 7 p.m. start. Iowa State won its first National Duals Championship with a 17-16 win over third-ranked Minnesota.
