NORMAN, Okla. -- With the spotlight on Oklahoma's crimson wrestling mat during Bedlam weekend, Oklahoma State reigned supreme in a 19-16 win over its archrival Sooners on Sunday at the Lloyd Noble Center.
With the two teams tied for fourth in the NWCA rankings, Oklahoma State improved its record to 12-4-1 and 3-1-1 in the Big 12, while Oklahoma fell to 15-4-1 and 2-1-1.
"I told Ty (Wilcox) I either wanted him to be the first match or the last match, I was glad he was the last match," said OSU head coach John Smith. "I knew I could get one thing out of him, and you'll always get it out of him, he'll put it on the line for seven minutes."
With the match tied at 16-16 and the season series tied at 1-1, OSU's 165-pounder Ty Wilcox and OU's Robbie Waller had seven minutes to decide in-state bragging rights in the final Bedlam dual of the season.
After a scoreless first period, Waller's escape 10 seconds into the second period proved to be the only points he could muster. Wilcox scored two takedowns, escaped and was awarded a locked hands point on his way to a 6-1 decision and a Cowboy win.
"I knew there was a lot of pressure out there, and I could either thrive off the pressure or fold under the pressure," said OSU's 165-pounder Ty Wilcox. "I like to think of myself as someone who thrives off the pressure, and I just went out there and did what I was supposed to do, and I was supposed to beat him."
OU's top-ranked 174-pounder Byron Tucker opened the dual with a 19-6 major decision over OSU's Tony Gansen.
The Pokes swept the next three matches with No. 5 Daniel Cormier picking up a major decision and No. 2 Mark Mu-oz and No. 20 Dave Anderton scoring decisions to bolster the Cowboy lead to 10-4.
At 125 pounds, OU's fourth-ranked Quantres Bates surprised the Cowboy's sixth-ranked Jeff Ragan and pinned him with one second left in the first period.
The Cowboys regained the lead at 133 pounds with a Charles Walker decision.
OU's No. 2 Michael Lightner narrowly edged Jamill Kelly at 141 pounds. Kelly was penalized a point for stalling with 45 seconds remaining to earn a, 2-1 decision.
Reggie Wright continued his dominance of OU's Jared Frayer, beating him for the sixth time in two years with a 7-2 decision.
The Sooners tied the match at 16-16 when David Kjeldgaard decisioned OSU's Shane Roller, 5-4.
The Cowboys will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 20, when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., to battle the Michigan State Spartans at 1 p.m.
