STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's fourth-ranked wrestling team lost to No. 2 Iowa State by a 20-18 score Sunday in Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU fell to 8-2-1 with the loss while the second-ranked Cyclones improved to 10-2.
OSU's two losses this season have come at the hands of the No. 1 and the No. 2 teams in the nation.
With the Cowboys trailing the dual by a 5-3 score after the first two bouts, sophomore Jamal Parks brought the Gallagher-Iba Arena crowd to its feet with a first-period fall of No. 10 Dalton Jensen at 141 pounds. The seventh-ranked Parks took down his opponent before sending him to his back and delivering the pin.
The Cowboys dropped three straight decisions following Parks' fall before Mike Benefiel and Clayton Foster earned wins to put the Cowboys back on top, 15-14 in the dual. However, Iowa State's top-ranked senior Jake Varner all but sealed OSU's fate when he pinned Oklahoma State's Alan Gelogaev at 197 pounds to give the Cyclones a 20-15 lead.
In the dual's featured match at heavyweight, OSU's No. 1-ranked Jared Rosholt scored three takedowns and two escapes en route to an 8-5 decision over second-ranked David Zabriskie.
Oklahoma State returns to action when it travels west to take on both Northern Colorado and Wyoming on Jan. 29. The Pokes take on UNC in Greeley, Colo., at 1 p.m., then load into the bus and battle Mark Branch's Wyoming squad at 8 p.m. in Laramie, Wyo., that same night.

Long took Notte down with 1:23 left in the first period, only to have Notte escape 15 seconds later. The Iowa State freshman took him down again with 38 seconds left in the period and was able to ride him out. Long chose down to start the second period and reversed Notte just 11 seconds into the period. The Cowboy junior escaped again before being taken down with 25 seconds left in the period and Long earned three nearfall points as time expired in the period. OSU was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty following the period. Long scored three takedowns in the final period, including one as time expired and after riding time was added he earned the five-point technical fall.
133 pounds: No. 6 Jordan Oliver toppled the reigning Big 12 champion with a 7-5 win over No. 9 Nick Fanthorpe. Oliver started the scoring with a takedown just 26 seconds into the match. Fanthorpe escaped 29 seconds later only to be taken down again by the Cowboy freshman with 1:04 left on the clock and was ridden out for the remainder of the period. Oliver chose down and escaped 15 seconds into period number two for the period's only scoring. The Cyclone senior escaped after choosing down to start the third period and earned another point when Oliver was called for stalling. Fanthorpe took Oliver down to tie the match but proceeded to cut him loose after Oliver's riding time was ensured to give the Cowboy a 7-5 win.
141 pounds: In the third-straight matchup of top-10 wrestlers, OSU's Jamal Parks got on the board first with a takedown of Dalton Jensen with 1:29 on the first-period clock. The Cowboy sophomore rode out the 10th-ranked Jensen until throwing him to his back with approximately 30 seconds left on the clock. After a flurry of attempts from Jensen to keep his shoulders off the mat, No. 7 Parks delivered the knockout blow and scored the six-point fall after 2:42 had expired.
149 pounds: No. 8 Mitch Mueller of Iowa State was a 7-2 winner over Quinten Fuentes. Mueller scored the bout's first points with a takedown 1:11 seconds into the match. After Mueller was warned for stalling, Fuentes escaped to get on the board. The Cyclone senior took Fuentes down again just before the buzzer sounded in the first period for a 4-1 lead. Fuentes escaped in the second period but was taken down again with 27 seconds left on the clock. Mueller chose down and picked up an escape for the third period's only scoring en route to a 7-2 decision.
157 pounds: No. 12-ranked Neil Erisman suffered an 8-7 upset defeat at the hands of Andrew Sorenson of Iowa State when Sorenson was credited with the winning takedown at the buzzer. Erisman got things started when he scored a single-leg takedown 29 seconds into the match and rode Sorenson out for the remainder of the period. After choosing down in the second period, Erisman picked up an escape and allowed only 13 seconds to come off his large riding time advantage. Sorenson earned a takedown to cut into Erisman's lead only to have the Cowboy junior escape 21 seconds later and take a 4-2 lead into the third period. After a lengthy scramble to start the third period, Sorenson evened the match at 4-4 with a takedown. He cut Erisman loose due to the Cowboy's riding time advantage and scored the takedown he needed to take a 6-5 lead. Sorenson again cut Erisman to tie the match at 6 and was able to hit the winning takedown as time expired to nullify Erisman's riding time for an 8-7 decision.
165 pounds: In one of the key bouts going in, fourth-ranked Jon Reader of Iowa State was a 7-5 winner over Alex Meade. Reader struck first with a takedown with 32 seconds left on the clock in the first period. Meade scrambled loose with a second left on the clock to get on board and was able to quickly escape after choosing down in the second period to even the match at two. The Cowboy freshman took Reader down as the two fell out of bounds to take his first lead of the bout, but was reversed 22 seconds later to level the scoring. Reader chose down to start the third period and was again able to reverse Meade for a 6-4 lead. Meade scored a late escape, but after riding time was added Reader picked up a 7-5 win.
174 pounds: Oklahoma State's No. 12-ranked Mike Benefiel controlled No. 19 Duke Burk en route to a comfortable 10-4 win. Benefiel wasted no time getting on the board with a takedown just eight seconds into the bout. Burk was able to escape, only to be taken down again by the Cowboy sophomore and was ridden out to end the first period. Benefiel chose down in the second period and took a 5-1 lead with an escape 21 seconds in. Burk started the third period in the down position and escaped, but Benefiel again took him down to grab a 7-2 lead. Benefiel countered an attack from Burk to score another takedown and after riding time was added, Benefiel earned a 10-4 win.
184 pounds: No. 13 Clayton Foster picked up his first win since returning from injury when he handed Jerome Ward a 3-1 defeat. After not much action to start the first period, Foster picked up a takedown with 20 seconds left on the clock and rode Ward out for the remainder of the period. Ward's escape after choosing down was the second period's only scoring. Foster narrowly missed a second takedown as he threw Ward to the mat as time expired in the period. After choosing down in the third period, Foster scored an escape to pick up the 3-1 decision and put the Cowboys back on top in the dual.
197 pounds: In one of the more anticipated bouts of the dual, top-ranked Jake Varner pinned No. 6 Alan Gelogaev at the 4:43 mark to all but seal the Cyclones' win in the dual. After no scoring in the first period, Gelogaev chose down to start the second period. He nearly escaped immediately and almost shook free a second time, but Varner maintained his grip and eventually got Gelogaev in a cradle and forced him onto his back. The undefeated Cyclone senior put the clamps on Gelogaev and scored the crucial fall with 17 seconds left on the second-period clock.
285 pounds: In the dual's featured match between OSU's top-ranked Jared Rosholt and second-ranked David Zabriskie, Rosholt struck first with a single-leg takedown just 34 seconds into the match. Zabriskie got on the board for the first time when he escaped 20 seconds later as the score was 2-1 after one period in the eighth meeting of the two All-Americans. After choosing down in the second period, Rosholt was able to escape and score another takedown and take a 5-2 lead into the final period after Zabriskie's escape. Zabriskie used Rosholt's attempt at a takedown to his advantage and bagged a takedown of his own to level the score at 5-5 with less than a minute remaining in the third period. Rosholt escaped with 34 seconds left to grab a 6-5 lead and picked up another takedown as time expired for an 8-5 decision.
