Coach John Smith
Opening statement
"I thought this was going to be a tougher match. I thought there could be some battle matches. They have a lot of guys in the middle of the road that are pretty competitive. If you would've told me that we were going to win it 25-13, I probably would've thought it was a good match on our part. After watching it and being exposed to a couple of areas, especially down wrestling, we just really struggled. I had two guys that had no pop in their step at '41 and '65. It just looked like we didn't have any type of fire. It didn't look like we wanted to compete to some point. Then, you look at guys like Oliver and Cayle Byers and Chris Perry with a solid 7-1 win. When you have these matches you're looking at some good and some bad. The one thing that I think we can get out of this is some of the things we're preaching in the room they're going to start to believe. I think we'll grow from this match. We'll get more out of this match than we could last weekend with Minnesota."
On Alan Gelogaev
"It's kind of what I've said all year with him. He's still developing. I think he was looking at his shoulder and he touch falled it, which in freestyle when your shoulder blades touch, it's over. In collegiate, it's a full second. He might have heard the referee slap the mat. I don't know. There's still some development there. Time and competition will help him develop."
On the team
"It's about focusing on your performance. Most of the time, if you wrestle well, and you wrestle ready to go, we're a good team. We had some of those guys do that tonight and some that didn't."
Cayle Byers
On coming back from his previous loss
"I just put that behind me. I feel like I wrestled well but just made a mental error at the end. I wanted to score in the first period this match but I just wasn't creating angles. I figured if I kept putting pressure on him the conditioning would do the rest."
On transferring
"I chose OSU because I felt comfortable here. It's a great program with great coaches and a great atmosphere."
Jordan Oliver
On his performance
"I'm just trying to get out there and get bonus points for the team. I want to put points on the board and make guys wrestle, not letting them just stand around. I'm just feeling a lot more comfortable getting on top of guys. If a cradle or pin is there, I'm going to take it. From the perspective that the team needs it and me getting it now is going to create a habit for a big pin that we might need to defeat Cornell or Iowa. So just getting in that habit and just wrestling."
On his conditioning
"It's no excuse for what happened at the all-star match. It was my first time down. Some people will say I was exposed by that but I would like to see them in those conditions. Just like last year, it is a process and it is a long season. All I can do is put that behind me and keep work on getting better. I'm far from nationals and the top shape I need to be in. I still have time and I'm comfortable with my conditioning."
On when do you like to wrestle
"I like to wrestle first and get the moment for my team. I like to let the guys see me put points on the board and swing the momentum toward the Oklahoma State side."
