Coach John Smith
On the match:
“To me, I do really believe that we have a lot better team than what we performed today. It just looked like we didn't have enough battles leading up to this. This is the team (Minnesota) that's wrestled No. 1 team Penn State and beat them. They came back two days later and wrestled the No. 4 team Cornell. So they've been in some pretty tough matches. Iowa State didn't do much for us to prepare for the tough match that I knew we were going to have. They came out and competed hard. They're well conditioned. They look like they got good match shape. We look like we struggled in several weight classes to really ever get it going. There was a couple of matches where we stayed real good and real focused. For the most part, we won most of those matches. The 197 just let it get away there at the end. That's something that I think Cayle Byers will be kicking himself all night about. Z had a good performance. A lot of points. It's exciting to watch. I never know what's going to happen with that guy. Something is fixing to happen at all times with him.”
On Jordan Oliver
“That was a great start for us going out and getting a pin against a pretty good kid. I don't know what that kid's record was but he was the No. 10 ranked kid in the country. Those are situations where you're wrestling once a week and you're getting a pin in the first period, you've really got to follow through in the week and get that match experience of a full seven minutes. Although everyone likes quick pins, you've got to be careful because you haven't wrestled a whole match.”
On Josh Kindig
“Josh Kindig's only match of the year last week he got a 47 second pin making weight for the first time. It didn't test his arms and it didn't test his body. He completely fell apart physically on the mat. He's not in that bad of shape. I love the kid. He works hard and he trains hard.
On Gelogaev:
“There was dominance, a lot of defense. A lot of single leg shots from his opponent and Z scoring off that position. This guy is exciting to wrestle. He's still a long way away from being the caliber of an NCAA champion. He didn't put a lot of effort into riding and breaking the guy down. There's definitely things in there that he has got to really concentrate on. For his first big match at heavyweight against a top-ranked guy, it doesn't get much better than that.”
Jordan Oliver
On the dual:
“I think coming in this was going to be a tough dual. We got really prepared this week to battle for ever y point. I think our guys wrestled really well. Overall I think we were ready for this dual but there are definitely things we need to work on to get better. I think we are in a spot that we want to be but there is still a lot of progression we need to be the No. 1 team.”
On his match:
“I was just trying to attack and put points on the board. I knew he was a tough opponent and he likes to be physical with his hands. Scoring anyway I can was my goal and putting points on the board.”
Alan Gelogaev
On the dual:
“They were a really good team and this was a really good win for us.”
On the future:
“We should be undefeated this year.”
