Cowgirl Netters Take Down LSU, 5-2

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team picked up its second win of 2011 and its second win over an SEC opponent Saturday, knocking off LSU, 5-2, at W.T. "Dub" Robinson Stadium.

“This is a really good win at a tough place to play,” coach Chris Young said. “I am really proud of our girls because they have continued to work hard and that paid off today.”

The Cowgirls fell in the first doubles match finished at No. 3 to start the day, but picked up big wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to earn the team point and the early lead. The biggest highlight from the doubles courts came from Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Kanyapat Narattana at the No. 1 spot, where the duo handily upset LSU's No. 39-ranked tandem of Whitney Wolf and Keri Frankenberger, 8-3.

The Lady Tigers then clawed back to tie the score at 1-1 as Wolf, ranked No. 60 in the ITA singles rankings, picked up a two-set win over OSU's Sasha Belova at No. 1 in the first singles match finished.

The Cowgirls answered by picking up a pair of straight-set wins of their own in the next two completed matches. Narattana handed Ariel Morton a, 6-3, 6-1, loss at No. 6 and OSU sophomore Malika Rose improved her perfect dual record to 7-0 with a win over LSU's Yvette Vlaar at No. 5.

With the score 3-1 in favor of the Cowgirls, Oklahoma State needed to win only one of the three remaining matches to pick up the dual win.

OSU did more even more than that, however, as C.C. Sardinha and Shatkovskaya claimed wins at Nos. 3 amd 2, respectively, to give the Cowgirls the 5-2 dual victory and end a six-match losing skid.

The Cowgirls, now 2-6, are back in action March 11 as they face both Oral Roberts and Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla.
