WACO, Texas -- The Oklahoma State equestrian team had a busy day at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships, advancing to the third place match in the hunter seat and the fifth place match in western at the Extraco Events Center Saturday.
The No. 2 seed Cowgirl western team fell to the No. 7 seed Kansas State Wildcats, 4-3, in the first matchup of the day. Oklahoma State began the morning with a 2-1 victory in reining, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats won horsemanship by a 3-1 margin to advance to the semifinals. Caroline Daniels and Rachel Houchin recorded head-to-head victories in reining while Marissa Dalton earned a team-high 155.5 to collect the only Cowgirl victory in horsemanship.
Oklahoma State had a quick turnaround to battle the No. 6 seed TCU Horned Frogs in the consolation bracket. Jenna Blumer and Caroline Daniels posted the two highest scores of the day for the Pokes in reining when they won their head-to-head matchups 144-141.5 and 143-135, respectively. The win was the second of the day for Daniels. The Cowgirls took three of the final four head-to-head points in horsemanship to secure the team victory. Lauren Halvorson kicked off the discipline with a 152-151 win. TCU knotted up the score by taking the point in the second head-to-head matchup. Courtney Whitacre responded to the pressure with the highest score of the evening for the Pokes in horsemanship, rolling to a 152.5-149 win. Marissa Dalton earned her second head-to-head point of the day and secured the victory for the Cowgirls with a 150.5-148.5 victory. With the win Oklahoma State moves on to compete with the South Carolina Gamecocks in the fifth place consolation match tomorrow at the Extraco Coliseum.
The hunter seat needed to defeat the top-seeded Auburn Tigers to advance to the finals of the competition, but were unable to do so as they fell, 8-0. They will battle a familiar opponent as they take on Big 12 foe Baylor in the third place consolation tomorrow.
