STILLWATER, Okla. – The No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team earned a trip to the NWCA National Duals national championship match Sunday afternoon, knocking off No. 5 Illinois 19-15 in the semifinal at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowboys (16-0), who notched their fifth top-10 win of the year with their victory over the Illini (16-3), move on to face No. 3 Minnesota at 6 p.m. in the final.
OSU won six of the 10 bouts, highlighted by Jordan Oliver earning a 15-1 major decision over No. 4 B.J. Futrell at 133 pounds.
The most exciting moments of the dual came in the final two bouts. With Cowboys trailing 13-15, Blake Rosholt and Austin Marsden both answered the call.
Rosholt outlasted No. 17 Mario Gonzalez for an 8-6 win in sudden victory to put the Cowboys up 16-15, meaning Marsden, a true freshman wrestling in the first dual of his career, would have to win to seal the team victory.
Marsden went back and forth with Pat Walker before finally earning a takedown in the final 20 seconds and hanging on for a 3-2 decision and a berth in the championship for the Cowboys.
Other OSU winners included Josh Kindig, Jamal Parks, and Chris Perry at 141, 149 and 174 pounds, respectively.
Minnesota earned their spot in the final with a 16-15 win over fourth-ranked Iowa.
