IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Cowboy wrestling squad suffered its third loss of the season, dropping a 24-6 match to No. 3 Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday.
"We got punched in the mouth by a good Iowa team and didn't know how to respond. We just laid down," coach John Smith said. "We didn't look like we were trying to score points early in the matches. It was almost like we were trying to set ourselves up to steal some of the matches."
The Pokes (3-3) lost eight of 10 matches, picking up wins at 141 pounds and 174 pounds. Five of the 10 matches were, according to national rankings, upsets.
After dropping tightly-contested bouts at 125 and 133 pounds, true freshman Anthony Collica put the first points on the board for the Cowboys.
Eddie Klimara dropped a 4-2 match to Thomas Gillman to open the dual at 125 pounds. Senior 133-pounder Jon Morrison suffered his first loss of the season, losing to No. 5 Tony Ramos, who is undefeated in Carver-Hawkeye Arena for his career.
No. 19 Collica took on No. 11 Josh Dziewa in a match that was wrestled until the end. Collica scored a takedown early in the first period to take the first lead of the night for the Cowboys. Dziewa escaped and scored a takedown with six seconds left in the period to carry the lead into the second period. A reversal for Collica in the second and a ride out in the third gave the freshman his 19th victory of the season.
The Cowboys did not produce another win until three bouts later at 174 pounds.
No. 5 Josh Kindig lost a 9-5 battle to Brody Grothus at 149 pounds, giving the Hawkeyes a 9-3 lead heading into one of the most anticipated match ups of the night.
At 157 pounds, No. 2 Alex Dieringer took on No. 1 Derek St. John. Dieringer racked up 1:35 riding time in the second period before getting reversed with 25 seconds left. Dieringer chose a neutral start for the third period, but was unable to score on St. John, falling 2-1. St. John, the 2013 NCAA champion, improved to 30-0 for his career at Carver-Hawkeye.
Second-ranked Tyler Caldwell was handed his second loss of the season in the form of a 3-1 overtime loss to No. 6 Nick Moore.
Chris Perry, ranked No. 2 at 174 pounds, gave the Cowboys their last win of the night. Perry went head-to-head with No. 6 Mike Evans. Perry scored a takedown in the first, and Evans answered with an escape. The two exchanged reversals in the second period, and an escape by Perry gave him a 5-3 lead heading into the final period. Evans picked up the escape, but Perry was able to hold on to win it, 5-4.
At 184 pounds, Nolan Boyd took on Sammy Brooks. Boyd took several shots and was active, but was outlasted, 7-1.
Jordan Rogers stepped in for an injured Blake Rosholt at 197 pounds, losing to 14th-ranked Nathan Burak, 8-3.
The final bout of the night was decided by a technical violation on Austin Marsden in his heavyweight match against No. 3 Bobby Telford. The sophomore dropped the final bout, 2-1.
The Cowboys will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., and Morgantown, W.Va., for a pair of duals.
