Cowgirls Drop Big 12 Semifinal to Kansas State
March 27, 2015 | Cowgirl Equestrian
SPRINGTOWN, Texas -
The Oklahoma State equestrian team fell, 10-8-2, to Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship semifinals in Springtown, Texas, on Friday.
"Today was a continuation of what has plagued us this year, we made some mistakes." Cowgirl equestrian coach Larry Sanchez said. "You can't go up against top-ranked teams like Kansas State, make mistakes and expect to win. These mistakes are things that we will overcome, but we've got to live with them today."
The Cowgirls and Wildcats tied in the hunter seat events with five points each, but Kansas State's 5-3-2 victory in western ultimately decided the meet.
The day started with equitation over fences and reining simultaneously.
In fences, Cowgirls Amy White and Allie Joyce notched the event's first two points. White knocked off Kansas State's Madison Wayda, 151-146. Joyce followed with a 158-147 win over Taylor Schmidt. The Wildcats responded, however, with three consecutive points to take the discipline, 3-2.
Kansas State took reining, 2-1-2 behind wins from Wildcats Nicholle Hatton and Kara Guy. Senior Katy Krshka notched the lone Cowgirl point in the event with a 139-133 triumph over Brynn Critcher to move to 9-1 in reining on the year.
After trailing, 5-3-2, at the halfway point of the meet, the Cowgirls picked up some steam in equitation on the flat with a 3-2 win. Jorden Davis, Maggie Drysch and Amy White each tallied points for the Cowgirls in their rides. Davis scored 137 to best Kansas State's Henley Adkins, and Drysch recorded a 133-91 win over Taylor Schmidt. Amy White edged Madison Wayda, 144-140 for the event-clinching point.
Oklahoma State took its first loss of the season in the horsemanship discipline on Friday, dropping the event, 3-2. The Wildcats scored the first two points in horsemanship before Krshka recorded a 147-141 victory over Alyssa Lombardi for her second win of the day and 18th overall win of the year. Lindsey McMullen tallied a 148-143.5 win over Kansas State's Kelsey Sousa for eighth win of the season, but it wouldn't be enough, as Wildcat Danielle Kemper sealed the event and meet victory for Kansas State.
The Cowgirls will have a chance to bounce back when they compete against fourth-seeded TCU for third place in the conference on Saturday at 10 a.m.
"Anytime you have a loss, it's good to get back into the arena and turn it around," Sanchez said. "We're excited about tomorrow and want to come out feeling better about this weekend than we feel today."
