Cowboys Continue Historic Start
February 27, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Cowboy Tennis squad is off to its best start since 2007 as they defeated No. 14 South Florida, 4-1, on Saturday at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic.
With the victory, the Cowboys extended their win streak to seven and got their second win over a top 15 opponent this year, which is the first time the Pokes have defeated two top 15 foes in a season since 2007.
The Cowboys (11-1; 0-0 Big 12) got off to a slow start in doubles with all three teams trailing early. Unfortunately, Cowboy duo Jurence Mendoza/Lukas Finzelberg couldn't bounce back from the slow start on court three as they suffered a 6-0 loss to South Florida's Roberto Cid/Ignacio Gonzalez.
With one doubles team down, No. 15-ranked duo Arjun Kadhe/Julian Cash answered South Florida's (7-4; 0-0 American) win by winning five straight games and beating No. 46 Dominic Cotrone/Justin Roberts, 6-4, to put the Cowboys right back in contention for the doubles point.
"The doubles point was an unbelievable comeback and it was huge for me and Julian (Cash) because we were down 4-1 at one point," junior Arjun Kadhe said.
On court two, Cowboys Temur Ismailov/Lucas Gerch fed off the momentum from Kadhe/Cash's victory on court one to make a late surge and clinch the doubles point for the Pokes with a 7-6(0) win against Sasha Gozun/Peter Bertran.
To start singles, Finzelberg got the Cowboys going with an impressive shutout victory over South Florida's Everth Dzib, 6-0, 6-0, to put the Pokes up 2-0. Finzelberg remains undefeated in his sophomore campaign with the victory at 8-0.
Ismailov continued the Cowboy success on court two as he defeated Gozun in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2.
One point away from their second victory against a top 15 team this season, the All-American Kadhe secured the Cowboy victory with a straight-set win over Roberts, 6-2, 7-5.
"My singles match was very tough, but I managed to stay on top of my game and stayed confident as the match went on," Kadhe said. "It was nice to clinch for the team and it was a great week for the team because everyone played solid."
The Pokes were the only team at the Blue Gray Classic to finish undefeated at the tournament as they went 2-0 in dual match play with victories over Alabama and No. 14 South Florida.
Next up for the Cowboys are the California Golden Bears on March 3rd in La Jolla, California. Following the match, Oklahoma State will participate in the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament, which is also in La Jolla.
