February 27, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 11 Oklahoma State Cowgirl tennis team was crowned champions of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on Saturday.
"I am so proud of our team for the way we responded to a tough loss yesterday," coach Chris Young said. "In the end our girls were strong physically and mentally and everyone competed extremely well."
The Cowgirls defeated No. 10 Pepperdine to capture the title. The championship match only involved doubles play.
OSU took two out of three matches to ensure the victory.
The championship was decided on court one, where Maria Alvarez and Kelsey Laurente knocked off the No. 12 tandem of Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox, 8-6.
On court two, Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari took on Luisa Stefani and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai of Pepperdine. The Cowgirl duo fell, 8-3, marking their first doubles loss of the season.
Cowgirls Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic responded with a key victory on court three against the Waves. Adamovic and Babic evened the match at one win apiece with an 8-4 victory against Laura Gulbe and Dzina Milovanovic.
The Cowgirls dominated No. 28 Alabama in a 4-0 victory on Saturday morning to advance to the title match.
The match marked the second time that the Cowgirls have faced the Crimson Tide this season, with OSU winning the first meeting 4-1 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship earlier this month.
"Alabama has improved a lot since we played them two weeks ago and today was a really good match," Young said.
The Cowgirls continued to dominate the doubles point, which they have not lost all year.
Adamovic and Babic made quick work of Joanna Nena Savva and Natalia Maynetto in a win on court three, 6-0.
Lushkova and Tur Mari kept captured the doubles point for the Pokes. The juniors, ranked No. 33, pulled away from Aryn Greene and Danielle Spielmann, 6-3.
The Cowgirls capitalized on the early advantage in singles play.
Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente posted straight-set victories in quick succession to give the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead.
Laurente had little trouble with Spielmann at the No. 4 position, winning, 6-0, 6-2.
Lushkova cruised past Nena Savva of the Crimson Tide, 6-3, 6-1.
Adamovic completed the sweep of the Crimson Tide. The Serbia native dropped the first set against No. 38 Andie Daniell; however, the Cowgirl provided a masterful performance in the final two sets to clinch the victory, winning 2-6, 7-5, 6-0.
The Cowgirls return to action on March 5, as they will host Oklahoma for Bedlam at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
