Cowboys Shutout Pepperdine, Extend Win Streak To 11
March 19, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
MALIBU, California – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad extended its win streak to 11 on Saturday with a shutout victory over No. 71 Pepperdine, 7-0, at the Ralph-Straus Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Cowboys (15-1; 0-0 Big 12) have now defeated 10 ranked opponents this year, which marks the highest number of wins vs. ranked foes in coach Jay Udwadia's tenure.
The Pokes got off to a lightning start against Pepperdine (5-6; 1-0 WCC) with all three doubles teams having a three game lead in each of their matches. Cowboys Lukas Finzelberg/Jurence Mendoza would be the first victors of the day by dominating Pepperdine's Tom Hill/Stefan Menichella, 6-2, on court three. The sophomore tandem has now won seven of their last eight doubles matches.
On court two, Tristan Meraut/Lucas Gerch continued their winning ways as they won six of the final eight games to defeat Pedro Iamachkine/Lautaro Pane, 6-3, and clinch the doubles point for the Cowboys.
All-American duo Arjun Kadhe/Julian Cash are still seeking their 30th doubles win of the season as they led No. 27-ranked Guilherme Hadlich/Gabriel Sidney, 5-4, on court one before Meraut/Gerch secured the point.
In singles play, No. 115-ranked Kadhe would extend the OSU lead quickly with an impressive victory over Pepperdine's Sidney in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Paris native Meraut would follow Kadhe's straight-set victory with one of his own on court four. The Cowboy defeated Pepperdine's Menichella, 6-2, 6-4, to get his 8th singles win of the spring and put the Pokes up 3-0.
Needing one point to clinch the win, Finzelberg found himself in a familiar spot as he had the opportunity to clinch yet another match for the Pokes. The sophomore would come through once again with a tough, 6-4, 6-3, victory against Pepperdine's Iamachkine.
Finzelberg has now closed out four matches this season for the Cowboys with each one coming against a ranked opponent. Also, the German native remains undefeated in singles this spring at 11-0.
With the victory already in hand, Mendoza extended the OSU lead to 5-0 with his three set win over Pepperdine's Van Slyke, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
Shortly after, Cash pushed the Cowboy lead to 6-0 with a comeback victory against Hadlich, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Gerch would complete the shutout for the Pokes as he defeated Pepperdine's Pane on court two, 7-5, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (11-9). The Cowboys have now shutout eight opponents this season.
Next up, Oklahoma State will host a doubleheader on Saturday at the Greenwood Tennis Center against No. 44 SMU at noon and Oral Roberts at 5:30 p.m.
