Cowboys Come Up Short Against No. 2 TCU
April 10, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad dropped its second-straight conference match on Saturday to No. 2 TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, 4-0.
The match was delayed 35 minutes due to the TCU vs. Texas women's match taking place earlier in the day. Once it got started, the Cowboys (16-5; 0-2 Big 12) came out of the gate strong in doubles as Lucas Gerch/Jurence Mendoza led 3-1 on one and Arjun Kadhe/Tristan Meraut were tied at 2-2.
Even with the fast start, TCU (19-2; 2-0 Big 12) claimed the first victory in doubles as Cameron Norrie/Alex Rybakov defeated Pokes Nathan Roper/Mateo Ruiz Naranjo on court three, 6-1.
With Gerch/Mendoza in control on one, Kadhe/Meraut went back-and-fourth on court two before TCU's Trevor Johnson/Guillermo Nunez made a late surge to take the doubles point with a 6-3 victory. The Cowboys have now lost four-consecutive doubles points.
OSU's Gerch got the Cowboys going in singles with his impressive 7-6(5) first set win over No. 16 Alex Rybakov on court two.
Unfortunately, the Horned Frogs would take the momentum right back as they won first sets on five of six courts, making the potential OSU comeback even tougher.
TCU's Johnson put his team on the board first in singles with a straight-set victory over Ruiz, 6-2, 6-1, giving the Horned Frogs a 2-0 lead.
Oklahoma native Roper battled with TCU's Jerry Lopez in the second set as he looked to force a third, but the junior came up just short, falling in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-4.
With TCU now up 3-0, the Cowboys needed to win the final four matches in singles to collect their first conference victory. Pokes Kadhe, Gerch and Mendoza found themselves in tough battles, but were holding their own in each one.
On court three, Meraut continued to put up a fight in the second set with No. 61 Nunez, but the Horned Frog wouldn't let up as he defeated the sophomore, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the 4-0 victory for the Horned Frogs.
The Pokes have now dropped three of their last four matches as they look to get back to their winning ways at home with all three remaining Big 12 matches being played at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
OSU will face No. 11 Texas Tech on Friday at 6 p.m. CT before College Match Day makes its way back to Stillwater for a Big 12 showdown with No. 45 Baylor on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
