April 30, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State women's tennis team advanced to the finals of the Big 12 Championship with a 4-0 victory against No. 33 Kansas on Saturday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Cowgirls will face Texas Tech at 1 p.m. for a chance to sweep the Big 12 regular season and conference tournament. The Cowgirls swept the Red Raiders 4-0 in the regular season in a match in Stillwater.
Sunday's championship match will be televised on Fox Sports 2.
"Playing at home, where we haven't lost all year, I like our chances and if we play the way we did today we'll be fine tomorrow," coach Chris Young said.
OSU will have a chance to win its first conference tournament since 2003.
"Kansas played us really tough last Sunday, but I'm proud of our girls for having the opportunity to get off the court quick today and we jumped on that and took advantage of it," Young said. "I believe we're going to be fresh and ready for our final tomorrow."
The Cowgirls (23-4) took advantage of a shorthanded Jayhawk squad that only had five healthy players. Due to an injury forfeit, OSU only needed to win one of two doubles matches to clinch the first point of the day.
Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari bounced back from last week's loss to the Jayhawks' Maria Jose Cardona and Anastasiya Rychagova. The Cowgirl tandem, ranked No. 60, took down the Kansas duo, 6-2.
The Jayhawks also conceded a point in singles due to injury, which meant the Cowgirls only needed to win two singles matches to advance to the finals.
Lushkova defeated Janet Koch for the second time in seven days at the No. 3 position. Lushkova gave the Cowgirls a 3-0 cushion over the Jayhawks with a straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-2.
"We obviously want to be in this position and it's exciting to be here at home and play for a championship," Lushkova said. "It hasn't happened in a while for Oklahoma State, so we really want to do something great here."
Senior Kelsey Laurente continued to win points in key moments for the Cowgirls. Laurente did not surrender a single game against Nina Khmelnitckaia in the first set. The senior closed the match for the Cowgirls, 6-0, 6-3.
"I just brought it and played my game with as much confidence as possible," Laurente said.
The Cowgirls have now been in the finals of the Big 12 tournament three out of the last four years, but look to capture the championship on Sunday.
"That's a goal this team's had since the very beginning and we've put ourselves in the position to do it," Young said.
