Cowboys Roll Past No. 9 Michigan in California
March 02, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team picked up its sixth top-25 win of the season on Thursday, as the fifth-ranked Cowboys routed No. 9 Michigan, 4-1, in a neutral-site affair at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Thursday's win marks the second time this season that OSU has beaten a top-10 opponent.
Seven of the squad's last eight matches have now come against teams ranked in the top 25, with OSU posting a 5-3 mark over that stretch. Oklahoma State (11-3, 0-0 Big 12) has also defeated a Big Ten opponent in each of its past three matches, after the Cowboys bested No. 25 Minnesota and No. 13 Northwestern on the road last weekend.
Thursday's top-10 showdown saw the Cowboys claim the doubles point for the 12th time this season, as they picked up wins on courts one and two to take the early 1-0 lead.
Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza, ranked No. 31 in the nation, were the first to claim victory in doubles action. The duo dropped Tyler Gardiner and Jathan Malik easily, 6-1, to pick up their 10th win of the season.
The fourth-ranked duo of Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe quickly followed up their teammates' win by besting No. 28 Runhao Hua and Alex Knight by the same 6-1 scoreline that Gerch and Mendoza posted. Cash and Kadhe's win brings their total to 20 for the season and marks their 10th win over a ranked opponent this year.
Oklahoma State continued to ride the early wave of momentum in singles play, as they captured the first set on five of the six courts in play.
Artur Dubinski was the first Cowboy to snag the first set, as well as the first to secure a point for his team. The sophomore quickly dropped No. 95 Kevin Wong, 6-0, 6-3, to pick up his fifth career singles victory and his first over a ranked opponent since joining the Cowboys last month.
The Wolverines, trailing 2-0, cut the deficit to one thanks to a victory on court six. Their attempts to claw back into the match were cut short, however, as Julian Cash cruised to his 12th singles win of the season. Cash, playing at the No. 1 position, dropped Michigan Jathan Malik in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to push the Cowboys out to a 3-1 lead.
Tristan Meraut followed suit just moments later on court five, knocking off Runhao Hua in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Meraut's victory on Thursday pushes his singles winning to five, as the junior has seamlessly stepped back into the OSU lineup in recent weeks. The Frenchman's win also marked his 25th career singles dual-match victory.
Meraut and the Cowboys will remain in California through the weekend to compete in the 128th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, which begins today. Despite the event beginning today, OSU's first matches in the prestigious tournament are not scheduled to be played until Friday.
