STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team pushed its winning streak to eight, as the seventh-ranked Cowboys shut out Wichita State, 4-0, on Thursday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Cowboys (16-3; 0-0 Big 12) have now recorded seven shutouts so far this season. Their eight-match winning streak also marks the team's longest since winning 11-straight matches from January 29 to March 19 last season.
"We knew coming into today that Wichita State could play," head coach Jay Udwadia said after the win. "Anytime you're playing at this level it's going to be a fight, and luckily sometimes we're able to win pretty handily. But in actuality, you're going to have some pretty tough matches and I'm proud of the way we pulled through in some of those today."
Oklahoma State, as it has done all season, quickly jumped in front of the Shockers, as the Cowboys swept doubles play with victories on all three courts.
Playing on court three, Artur Dubinski and Lukas Finzelberg were the first to claim victory on Thursday. The right-handed duo overpowered Wichita State's Haru Inoue and Jan Poboril in the match en route to picking up a 6-0 victory.
The tandem's win was followed up by Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe, now ranked No. 2 in the nation, on court one, where the All-American duo bested Jocelyn Devilliers and Eddie Stoica, 6-4. Cash and Kadhe's victory marks their 22nd as a tandem this season and the duo's 56th overall.
"We started very well in doubles today," Kadhe said. "A lot of credit goes to Wichita State because those guys are a very good team, but I thought we started well and I thought we were in control throughout the match."
Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza, serving 5-4 on court two, were allowed to play out the remainder of their match against Murkel Dellien and Marius Frosa. The left-handers quickly polished off the Cowboys' sweep of doubles play, as Gerch hammered a ace to clinch the duo's 13th win of the year.
The Cowboys have now claimed the doubles point in 16 of their 19 matches this season and have posted a 15-1 record in those contests.
Oklahoma State then proceeded to follow up its doubles triumph with singles wins on courts two, five and six to secure the squad's 16th win of the season.
Jurence Mendoza was the first to strike in singles action, as the junior knocked off Jan Poboril in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Mendoza's win marked the 100th singles victory this season for Oklahoma State and brought the left-hander's total to a team-high 15 for the year.
"Jurence has had a great week of practice," Udwadia said. "He really picked it up this week in practice and I was very confident in his ability to go out and pick up a win today."
His doubles partner Lucas Gerch quickly followed suit on court two. The senior cruised to his seventh-straight singles win on Thursday, dropping Jocelyn Devilliers in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Gerch has now won 76 singles matches during his time in Stillwater, leaving him just one victory shy of tying Glenn Nakazawa for fifth place in team history.
The Cowboys' clinching point came from Tristan Meraut on court five, where the junior defeated Eddie Stoica, 6-3, 6-2, to seal the match. Meraut is now riding an eight-match winning streak in singles, which is tied for the longest by a Cowboy this season.
Up next for OSU is its last non-conference road trip of the year, as they head to Dallas, Texas to square off with No 32 SMU on Sunday at 3 p.m.
