Babic Tallies 100th Doubles Win as Cowgirls Defeat Mountaineers
March 18, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State women's tennis senior Vladica Babic added her name to the school record book Sunday afternoon, making history with her 100th career doubles win while leading the Cowgirls to a 4-1 win over West Virginia.
Â
The Cowgirls (11-1, 2-0 Big 12) are winners of seven straight after this weekend's opening matches of Big 12 action.
Â
OSU opened by taking the doubles point from the Mountaineers with wins on the top two doubles courts. Babic and Sofia Blanco struck first in a 6-1 decision to lock up win No. 100 for the Cowgirl senior. Win the win, Babic became the seventh player in program history to reach the doubles benchmark, and the first since Monika Waniek did in 1991.
Â
After the Mountaineers claimed a 6-2 win on court three, Marina Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova tallied their second win of the weekend in a 7-5 triumph over Paula Goetz and Lyn Yuen Choo on court two to put the doubles point on the board for the Pokes.
Â
West Virginia was the first to pick up a win in singles as Giovanna Caputo defeated Cowgirl Sami Court on six; however, the Cowgirls responded nicely in finishing off three straight-set wins on courts one, two and four to keep the team's win streak going.
Â
Marina Guinart pushed her record this spring to 8-0 in a dominant, 6-0, 6-1 win over West Virginia's Sofia Duran to regain the lead for OSU. Shortly after, Babic pushed her career singles win total to 87 in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Christina Jordan in the top singles position.
Â
Megan McCray claimed her second singles win of the weekend in a 6-3, 6-1 tally over Anne-Sophie Courteau at No. 2 to clinch the match for the Pokes. Since rejoining the program this spring McCray has been on fire, winning 10 of her 11 matches.
Â
The Cowgirls will be back in action this week, beginning Friday night as they'll head south to Waco, Texas to kick off a weekend in the Lone Star State with a conference showdown against Baylor. Before returning to Stillwater, they'll travel to Austin for a match against No. 13/12 Texas on Sunday at noon.
