STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's men's tennis team responded to their midweek loss at Tulsa with a 5-2 victory over Charlotte and a 4-0 win over UMKC on Friday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
"We've played a lot of matches," Cowboy head coach Jay Udwadia said. "We had a lot of break in February. I think we had two weeks off, so it was a good time for us to rest and recover and this batch of matches was really good for our endurance."
In the first match of the day, the No. 23 Cowboys took the doubles point behind Brady Draheim and Matej Vocel's tiebreak win over Charlotte's Oliver Sec/Leonardo Menezes, 7-6 (7-5), on court three.
"It's tough for me and for us coming back from injury, so this was a big match for us," Vocel said. "I am more healthy, so I can play more of my game and be more successful."
The tandem of Mathieu Scaglia and Maxim Tybar, ranked No. 22 in the nation, recorded the other doubles victory for the Pokes, defeating No. 26 Luca Keist and Constandinos Christoforou of Charlotte, 6-3.
Charlotte responded quickly as Ignasi de Rueda beat Tybar, 6-2, 6-1, on court two, knotting the match at one.
Matej Vocel reclaimed the lead for the Cowboys, defeating No. 84 Luca Keist, 6-0, 6-1. This was Vocel's team-leading fourth win over a ranked opponent this year.
Wins by No. 85 Artur Dubinski and Mathieu Scaglia clinched the match for the Cowboys.
In the second match of the day, the Pokes took the doubles point again behind the tandems of Draheim/Vocel and Hammond/Hudd.
In singles, Vocel, Hammond and Hudd won their matches within five minutes of each other to quickly sweep the 'Roos, 4-0.
The Cowboys extend their all-time series lead with UMKC to 5-0.
OSU (13-5, 0-0 Big 12) is back in action Wednesday, as it will travel to No. 33 Central Florida (8-8, 1-0 American) at 5 p.m. CST, for its last non-conference match of the season.
