Cowgirls Take Out 10th-Ranked Kansas in Conference Opener

STILLWATER –The No. 11 Oklahoma State women's tennis team earned their first top-10 win of the season on Friday evening at the Greenwood Tennis Center, defeating Kansas, 6-1. It marked the Cowgirls second win over the Jayhawks this season, with KU appearing at the ITA Kick-Off event back in January.
"I think we've really been putting in a lot of work, and we knew coming out we were going to have one of the toughest matches of the week," said coach Chris Young. "For us, I thought it was a statement win. It's important for us to protect our home court and play the way we need to play. This team has continued to build confidence."
Unlike the January matchup between the two Big 12 programs, OSU clinched the doubles point this time around with solid play on courts two and three. Tamara Arnold and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat struck first defeating Maria Toran Ribes and Malkia Ngounoue, 6-2. The Jayhawks took the next match, as the second-ranked duo of Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia came out on top against No. 39 Sofia Blanco and Lisa Marie Rioux, 6-2. Marina Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova clinched the doubles point for the Cowgirls, defeating No. 40 Sonia Smagina and Anastasia Rychagova, 6-2.
Going into singles play, No. 83 Guinart dominated Smagina in two sets, 6-3, 6-0. Tamara Arnold continued finished her bout shortly after, dropping Ngounoue, 6-3, 6-2.
No. 124 Sofia Blanco clinched the dual with a victory over Toran Ribes, 6-2, 6-3. Kansas scored their first and only point of the day as No. 34 Rychagova won her match against No. 26 Katarina Stresnakova.
No. 117 Rioux got the Cowgirls back on track with an upset over No. 88 Janet Koch just before Thamchaiwat capped off the day for OSU with a tiebreaker victory over Khmelnitckaia.
The Cowgirls return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center as they host the No. 33 Kansas State Wildcats.
