Cowgirls Split Meets in Martin
MARTIN, Tenn. – Oklahoma State's fourth-ranked equestrian team completed their rout of No. 10 UT Martin, 14-4, Friday before dropping a 12-8 decision against No. 1 Auburn at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
The Cowgirls had a strong performance against the host Skyhawks on Thursday in Flat and Reining, taking the events, 3-1, and 4-1, respectively. They continued their dominant performance today, putting the meet away with Fences and Horsemanship.
"We had very strong rides against the Skyhawks," Coach Larry Sanchez said. "The girls are riding with a lot of confidence."
OSU's Katie Schell topped Haley Kane, 85-69, in an MOP performance, and Cowgirl freshman Sydney North followed suit, besting Brooke Pfieffer, 78-75. Hannah Janson picked up a win over Grace Rogers, 84-77, before Sydnie Ziegler finished out fences, putting away Kelby Kane, 80-78.
In Horsemanship, OSU's Harley Huff defeated Devon Woods, 75-71.5, and JoJo Roberson took the point against Paige Benson, 75-73.5, to collect MOP honors. Emma Verpank cemented the victory with a triumph over Lucy Eier, 74.5-72.5.
Shortly after defeating UT Martin, the Cowgirls began their meet against top-ranked Auburn. The first half of the meet consisted of Fences and Horsemanship. Abigail Brayman was responsible for OSU's lone point in Fences, besting Megan Knapic, 83-40, in an MOP performance.
Auburn also took Horsemanship, 3-2. OSU's Cassidy Watters claimed a point against Kara Kaufmann, 75.5-74, and Verplank received MOP honors for her 78-77.5 victory over Taylor Searles.
Over the second half of the meet, OSU had a successful outing in Flat, taking the event, 3-2, with Abigail Brayman, Katie Schell and Hannah Coleman posting wins for the Cowgirls.
In Reining Hannah Mitchell and Stephanie Helsen claimed victories for the Cowgirls. Hannah Lovrien came within half a point of Auburn's Deanna Green, and Gentry Cherry was only one point shy of tying her opponent Terri-June Granger.
"We had several strong rides against Auburn and a couple we'd like to have back," Sanchez said. "You can't make mistakes against a strong team. We'll continue to work hard, as we have the talent to have a great season."
The Cowgirls will return to action Friday in Stillwater when they host South Dakota State in OSU's first home meet of the season.
