AUSTIN, Texas – Oklahoma State's 34th-ranked women's tennis ream capped off an undefeated weekend to kick off conference play on Sunday, upsetting the 12th-ranked Texas in Austin, 4-3.Â
OSU put together another complete showing to finish off the weekend, improving to 9-4 on the season and 2-0 in Big 12 play. The reigning national champions in Texas dropped to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.Â
The Cowgirls struck first and grabbed the early advantage after claiming the doubles point behind a pair of victories on the first and third courts. Â
The Cowgirls' 31st-ranked tandem of Ayumi Miyamoto and Raquel Gonzalez was in control from start to finish in a 6-2 victory over the No. 27 Longhorn doubles duo of Charlotte Chavatipon and Sabina Zeynalova.Â
Alana Wolfberg and Sofia Rojas battled hard but fell short against Texas' Nicole Khirin and Marlee Zein, 6-1. Martina Zerulo and Lucia Peyre were challenged early before rising to the occasion to take down Taisiya Pachkaleva and Nicole Rivkin, 7-6 (5), to secure the doubles point. Â
Texas immediately answered the doubles defeat with two consecutive points to start singles action. Khirin defeated Kristina Novak, 6-0, 6-2, to get the Longhorns on the board. Wolfberg dropped a hard-fought match against No. 101 Zeynalova, 6-3, 6-2.Â
OSU countered as Rojas bested Rapolu, 7-5, 6-3, to tie the match at two apiece. Peyre dropped her match against No. 58 Chavatipon, 6-4, 7-5. In a fight to the finish, Miyamoto secured a 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory over Pachkaleva.Â
Gonzalez put the team on her back with an unbelievable showing of toughness and resilience defeating Rivkin, 6-3, 7-3, to clinch the match for OSU.Â
Next up, OSU will return home to continue its conference gauntlet by taking on TCU on Friday at 5 p.m. and Texas Tech two days later on Sunday at 1 p.m.Â
