Cowgirl Tennis Opens NCAA Tournament With Victory Over Denver

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The 17th-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team secured a 4-1 victory over No. 48 Denver on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
OSU improved to 16-7 on the year while also advancing to the second round for the ninth time in the last ten NCAA Tournaments.
The Pioneers struck first and claimed the doubles point. On court two, Denver's Claudia Martinez de Velasco and Taylor Melville topped Alana Wolfberg and Kristina Novak, 7-5, before Lucia Peyre and Sofia Rojas dropped their match, 7-5, against Louise Wikander and Caroline Driscoll.
No. 15 Ayumi Miyamoto and Raquel Gonzalez were the only Cowgirls to secure their doubles matchup after posting a 6-3 victory over Britt Pursell and Andrea Beltran. The court one duo for Oklahoma State has now won 14 of their last 16 matches.
The Cowgirls did not let the deficit hold them back as they went undefeated in singles play. Gonzalez continued her successful day by dropping Martinez de Velasco, 6-3, 6-2.
Miyamoto extended her winning streak to fourteen matches after a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Wikander. Wolfberg defeated Denver's Burgete Beltran in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, before Novak clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-5 win on court one over No. 91 Melville.
OSU will return to the Taube Family Tennis Center to face the winner of sixth-ranked Stanford and Weber State in the second round tomorrow at 3 p.m. CT with an NCAA Sweet 16 berth on the line.
