TULSA, Okla. – The No. 5 Oklahoma State wrestling team took down No. 12 Cornell, 22-12, in the opening round of the National Duals Invitational sponsored by Paycom on Saturday morning at the BOK Center.
The Cowboys won six of 10 bouts, collecting bonus points in three of them. The win improved OSU to 2-0, while the loss dropped Cornell to 0-1.
"That was a very scrappy dual," coach David Taylor said. "That was a team effort. It wasn't about the individuals; it was about the team. As a team, we need to improve, and that's why we're here."
Fresh off Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honors, true freshman and No. 5-ranked Landon Robideau (157) collected his second bonus-point victory of his young career with a technical fall win over Cornell's Benny Rogers.
Cowboy veterans No. 2 Troy Spratley (125) and No. 9 Konner Doucet (HWT) both picked up major decision wins over ranked opponents. Both Spratley and Doucet have collected bonus points in each of their bouts this season.
Other true freshmen, No. 6 Dee Lockett (165) and No. 20 Sergio Vega (141), each moved to 2-0 on the season, with Vega defeating Josh Saunders, 5-0, and Lockett taking down No. 24 Louis Cerchio, 6-3. Lockett has now taken down a ranked opponent in both his bouts this season.
Cowboy 197-pounder Cody Merrill also picked up his second win on the season over Cornell's Aiden Hanning.
Both No. 4 Casey Swiderski and No. 17 Alex Facundo dropped close matches to top-10 foes, while No. 8 Richard Figueroa II and No. 4 Zack Ryder fell to unranked opponents.
The Cowboys face No. 7 North Carolina State in the quarterfinal round at 5 p.m. at the BOK Center.
