STILLWATER –Oklahoma State's women's tennis program has added Chris Wootton as an assistant coach, it was announced today by Cowgirl head coach Katarina Adamovic.
"Chris is one of the best development coaches I have been around and we share the same mindset and vision when it comes to building a successful program," Adamovic said. "I am very excited to continue building this program alongside him at Oklahoma State."
Wootton joins the Cowgirl tennis program after spending the past year as an assistant coach for a Houston program under the direction of Adamovic.
"Chris is someone I trust and have tremendous respect for," Adamovic said. "We worked together at Missouri and again this past season at Houston, where we had a lot of success, and I've seen firsthand the impact he has on player development and overall program growth."
In his lone season with the program, he helped the Cougars to a 17-6 record and 8-6 mark in Big 12 play after Houston went 4-16 overall and 1-12 in the Big 12 during the previous season. Houston finished tied for sixth in the Big 12 and qualified for the conference tournament.
Before arriving at Houston, Wootton spent two seasons as an associate coach for his alma mater, UT-Tyler. His best season came in 2024-25, when the Patriots went 18-10 overall and 7-3 in the Lone Star Conference, including a runner-up finish in the conference tournament and two top 25 upsets.
In 2019, Wootton made the move to Missouri, serving as the Tigers' associate head coach. In 2020, he took over the head coaching position of the Missouri program, serving in that role until 2023.
Wootton helped the Tigers set multiple program records, including guiding Bronte Murgett to the program's first NCAA singles win, while leading a 15-win 2020–21 season with the Tigers' first ITA Regional title and a rise from preseason No. 178 to No. 36.
Wootton made his coaching debut for UT-Tyler during the 2015-16 season as a graduate assistant before making stops at Williams College (2016-17) and USC (2017-19) as an assistant coach.
Before becoming a collegiate coach, Wootton competed for Mississippi College (2011-13) and UT-Tyler (2013-15), where he earned his master's degree in business administration.
In 2015, Wootton captured All-America honors in doubles at the age of 39, becoming the oldest All-American in NCAA history in any sport across all divisions.
Between 1995 and 2011, Wootton coached more than 50 NCAA college tennis players and more than 20 ATP/WTA touring pros. He also played professionally for six years, collecting singles and doubles wins over top-100 ATP players.
Wootton and his wife, Robin, have two daughters, Christiane and Isabel.
