Ryan Osborn
- Title:
- Defensive Line
Osborn arrives after most recently serving as Charlotte’s defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach for each of the past two seasons.
The 2024 season saw his unit at Charlotte rank No. 16 in the nation in red zone defense and No. 29 in the nation with a pair of defensive touchdowns.
In his first season at Charlotte, Osborn's defense improved by more than 10 points allowed per game from the previous season in 2022 and held six opponents to 140 passing yards or fewer. His defense played a major role in the 10-7 win over East Caroline, setting a program record with only 127 yards allowed in the game.
Before arriving at Charlotte, Osborn worked as a defensive assistant with the outside linebackers and defensive linemen for Baltimore Ravens, who reached the 2022-23 AFC Playoffs. During the regular season, the Ravens' stout defense ranked third in the NFL in rushing defense (92.1 yds per game), third in points allowed (18.1 per game) and fifth in sacks.
Prior to that Osborn was a defensive analyst for Michigan in 2021, when the unit produced the nation's eighth-ranked scoring defense (17.4 ppg), ranked 20th in yards allowed per game (330.9) and 11th in red zone touchdown efficiency (45.7%). Michigan's defense was led by defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and outside linebacker David Ojabo, who were coached by Osborn. Per Pro Football Focus, the duo combined for 116 pressures, more than any other pair in the country. Hutchinson, who earned 2021 first team All-America honors and was a Heisman Trophy finalist, went on to star for the Detroit Lions, while Ojabo earned second team All-America honors and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens.
He also worked closely with Michigan standout defensive linemen Mazi Smith and Mike Morris.
Osborn served as the defensive line coach and co-special teams coordinator at UT Martin in 2020 prior to his move to Michigan. He spent two years as a defensive graduate assistant for head coach Dan Mullen at both Florida (2018-19) and Mississippi State (2016-17), working with Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Todd Grantham at both schools from 2017-19.
With the nationally ranked Gators, Osborn helped produce one of the top defensive units in the country. The Gators ranked first in the SEC in interceptions (15), tackles for loss (97), sacks (46) and red zone defense (64.5 percent) and second in total defense (299 ypg) and scoring defense (14.4 ppg) during his time there. His duties included running the opponent offensive scout team along with being responsible for the opponent run game and pass protection on weekly scouting reports.
At Mississippi State in 2016, Osborn assisted linebackers and graded the group after every game. He assisted with the outside linebackers in 2017 while assuming responsibility for the run game and pass protections.
His coaching stops before that included positions at St. Norbert College (2014-15), Amherst College (2013) and Maine Maritime Academy (2011-12).
Osborn earned his bachelor's degree from Bridgewater State University in 2011 and his master's degree from Mississippi State in 2017.
