- Title:
- Defense Quality Control
Thompson arrived at Oklahoma State in December of 2024 with experience as a defensive coordinator and secondary coach at the university, junior college and high school levels. He has spent 11 years as a defensive coordinator.
A talented recruiter, Thompson is known as “Coach T” and is a native of Mississippi. He has excelled in a leadership role with the recruitment and development of defensive players throughout his career.
Before his arrival in Stillwater, Thopmson spent three seasons on Buddy Stephens’ staff at East Mississippi Community College from 2022-24, working as the defensive coordinator and with the secondary.
EMCC posted a combined 23-10 record during Thompson’s three seasons and produced back-to-back MACCC championships in his first two years, as well as a NJCAA championship runner-up finish in his second year.
He helped coach more than 30 EMCC defensive players to move on to the four-year university level, including several who went to power conference schools. Thompson’s defensive units ranked near the top of the NJCAA Division I in interceptions and sacks, as EMCC produced more than 20 all-conference defensive performers during his tenure.
Before EMCC, Thompson served as the associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator at West Alabama, where the 2021 Tigers squad topped the Gulf South Conference in total defense while ranking second in rushing defense and third in scoring defense as a team. UWA featured a trio of defensive players who earned postseason honors, including AFCA Division II Coaches’ All-American first-team defensive lineman Chris Terrell.
Before moving up to the university level, Thompson spent two seasons within the MACCC ranks as the associate head coach, defensive coordinator, and defensive backs coach at Hinds Community College. During Thompson’s two years on the Hinds coaching staff, he worked with nine all-conference defensive performers, including 2019 All-Region 23 defensive back Kyree Fields. As a team, Hinds finished among the top 20 nationally in scoring defense both seasons and ranked among the national leaders in pass defense.
Thompson coached at four different Mississippi high schools following his collegiate playing days at Jones College and the University of Southern Mississippi. His most recent stint at the prep level came at powerhouse Starkville High School. In Thompson’s two seasons as the team’s defensive coordinator, the Yellow Jackets were a combined 24-5 overall with a Class 6A North State championship and Region 2-6A title in 2017. The titel run was led by a dominant defense that allowed 11.8 points per game, recording three shutouts, 36 turnovers and 40 sacks. He capped his Starkville coaching days by being selected to SHS head coach Chris Jones’ North team for the 2018 Bernard Blackwell Classic All-Star Game.
Thompson began his football coaching career in 2010 at his high school alma mater in Raleigh and helped mentor Isaiah Pugh, who tied for the state lead with 10 pass interceptions in 2012. He also worked with longtime NFL veteran Donte Moncrief.
He earned his first collegiate coaching experience in Kansas by helping turn around Bethany College’s defensive unit from 2011-12, as the team reached its highest win total in nearly 10 years after the defense improved dramatically to rank second in the conference and 13th in the nation in pass defense.
Thompson then returned to his home state with assistant coaching stints at Madison Central High School and Taylorsville High School.
In addition to his collegiate and prep coaching experience, Thompson also served as a 2021 Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Intern for the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.
Thompson spent his prep career at Raleigh High School in Mississippi and played in the Mississippi Bernard Blackwell All Star game as a senior. Following his high school career, Thompson earned a football scholarship as a defensive back to Jones College, where the Bobcats finished as 2007 conference runners-up. Thompson then transferred to Southern Miss and was a member of back-to-back R+L New Orleans Bowl teams. He was coached by head coach Larry Fedora, Travaris Robinson and Tony Hughes.
Upon earning his bachelor’s degree in education from USM in 2010, Thompson went on to receive his master’s in education in 2014 and a specialist’s degree in educational leadership in 2016, both from William Carey University.
