Scott Sutton’s Cowboy roots run deep. The son of legendary head coach Eddie Sutton helped lead Oklahoma State to consecutive NCAA tournaments as a player in the mid-90’s before becoming the all-time coaching wins leader at Oral Roberts. He's been an experienced hand on the Cowboy Basketball bench since 2017.
The 2025-26 season marks Sutton's ninth at OSU and second as Special Assistant to head coach Steve Lutz.,
At OSU, Sutton has been part of three 20-win seasons and seven postseason victories. The 2021 Cowboys reached the second round of the NCAA tournament and the 2018, 2023 and 2025 squads advanced to the NIT quarterfinals.
In 18 seasons as the head coach at Oral Roberts (1999-2017), Sutton guided the Golden Eagles to a program record 328 career victories. His teams reached the postseason eight times, including three tournament bids. The three-time Summit League Coach of the Year also produced four AP All-Americans and four conference players of the year.
Sutton was arguably the most efficient guard in OSU history during his two-year Cowboy career (1992-94) during which the Cowboys twice reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. He still holds the program’s season (5.67) and career records for assist-to-turnover (3.69). As a senior he tallied 119 assists with just 21 giveaways.
After graduating from OSU in 1995, Sutton made the short trip to Oral Roberts to serve on staffs under Bill Self (1995-97) and Barry Hinson (1997-99).
He was announced as the head coach at ORU on April 30, 1999 and wasted little time in returning the program to prominence. Sutton and the Golden Eagles fired off 14 consecutive winning seasons starting in 2001-02, highlighted by a run of three straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2006-08.
Sutton’s teams took down a number of notable names during his tenure, including the likes of Arkansas, Georgetown, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and even Oklahoma State.
A 78-71 win in Allen Fieldhouse against the No. 3 Jayhawks on Nov. 15, 2006 put the basketball world on notice – ORU had arrived. The Golden Eagles would go on to win 21 games that year, capture the Summit League regular season and tournament crowns and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
ORU returned to March Madness in each of the next two seasons marking the first time in program history that the Golden Eagles had danced in back-to-back years. Sutton’s teams logged additional postseason bids in 2011 (CIT), 2012 (NIT), 2013 (CIT) and 2015 (CBI).
Under Sutton, Caleb Green was a three-time All-American and won three Summit League Player of the Year Awards. Dominique Morrison did the same during the 2011-12 season. He also coached five Freshman All-Americans, four conference newcomers of the year, two league defensive MVPs and a pair of sixth men of the year.
Sutton’s own trophy case includes three different Summit League Coach of the Year awards (2002, 2008 and 2012). In 2005 he shared the NABC’s District 12 Coach of the Year honor with his father, Eddie, and in 2007 he was a finalist for the Clair Bee National Coach of the Year.
No head coach has won more Summit League games than Sutton (173) and his .665 conference winning percentage also ranks among the best in league history.
Sutton and his wife, Kim, are the parents of three daughters: Hallie, Lauren and Maggie.
