LINCOLN, Neb. - Oklahoma State left little doubt in the minds of the seventh-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers who was the better wrestling team as the fifth-ranked Cowboys ran away with a 30-7 win at the Bob Devaney Center.
You've got to be encouraged with the way our team performed today," said Cowboy head coach John Smith. "Coming off of the Iowa dual I really think we came out and gave a good effort."
OSU improves to 10-4-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in Big 12 action, Nebraska falls to 7-5-1 and 1-2 in the conference.
Both marquee match-ups went the way of the Cowboys as No. 7 Daniel Cormier pinned No. 5 Charles McTorry in 6:48 at 184 pounds, and third-ranked Mark Mu?oz decisioned second-ranked Brad Vering, 6-5, in the 197 pound match.
Mu?oz beat Vering for the second time this year and and took a 4-2 advantage in the all-time meetings. However, Mu?oz did injure a knee late in the third period during the scramble that produced the takedown that gave him the win.
The injury didn't appear serious, but his status for tomorrow night's NWCA All-Star Dual is in question. Mu?oz is scheduled to wrestle Michigan State's top-ranked Nick Muzashvili.
Cormier continues to pummel the top 184-pounders in the country, this time pinning NU's fifth-ranked McTorry. The turning point in the match was when Cormier countered a McTorry bear hug with a double underhook and put McTorry on his back, just missing the pin with :01 second remaining in the first period.
Cormier finally got the fall with just :12 seconds remaining in the match. He improves his record to 20-2.
Oklahoma State also got bonus points at 285 where Dave Anderton came out of a slump and pinned Nebraska's Andy Christensen. The Pokes scored decisions at 125, 133, 141 and 149.
The Cowboys return home on Friday, Feb. 11, for a 7 p.m. dual with ninth-ranked Northern Iowa, before traveling to Norman on Sunday, Feb. 13, for the third installment of the Bedlam Series at 3 p.m.
