FORT WORTH, Texas -
The No. 21 Oklahoma State men's tennis team opened Big 12 play on Friday with an electrifying 4-3 triumph over 55th-ranked TCU at the Friedman Tennis Center.
The Cowboys (18-2) ended a 29-match conference losing streak with the victory, marking the team's first Big 12 win since a 2009 Big 12 Tournament win over Texas Tech.
Oklahoma State earned the match's first point with outstanding efforts from Sude/Kadhe at No. 1 and Gerch/Sachs at No. 2. The Cowboys' top doubles duo took down 16th-ranked Chappell/Stein, 8-3, while Gerch and Sachs provided the clinching match with an 8-4 win over No. 73 Dachs/Daniel. The two victories were OSU's third and fourth wins over ranked doubles tandems in 2014.
The beginning of singles play saw TCU quickly earn its first lead of the match by taking wins at Nos. 2 and 3. No. 121 Arnau Dachs downed Sebastian Sachs, 6-4, 6-1, and 107th-ranked Facundo Lugones held off Arjun Kadhe with a 7-6(3), 6-4 victory.
After the first two matches ended in straight sets, singles action at Nos. 1, 4, 5 and 6 moved to third sets with TCU leading, 2-1. Despite falling in his first set, 6-1, Chris Haworth rallied to tie the match with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 comeback victory over Andres Alfonzo.
Minutes later, Brady Borhnstedt gave the Cowboys a 3-2 advantage by defeating Trey Daniel, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. The senior's win on court five improved his perfect singles record to 12-0 while also marking his fourth three-set victory of the year.
With the Cowboys sitting one match short of clinching the conference battle, Jakob Sude roared back from a 4-1 third-set deficit to even #41 Nick Chappell at five games a piece. However, 62nd-ranked Sude would eventually fall short in a 4-6, 6-3, 5-7 defeat, leaving the match in the hands of Lucas Gerch on court four.
Gerch and TCU's Rodolfo Bustamente swapped games throughout a majority of the third set, but the Cowboy freshman sealed the match by winning the final two games of the 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 thriller.
The Cowboys will continue their weekend set on Sunday with a matchup in Austin against No. 11 Texas before facing Texas A&M Corpus-Cristi in a neutral site match on Monday. For more updates and information, follow @CowboyTennis on Twitter.
