Cowboys Make History, Sweep Doubleheader
March 13, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad joined the record books once again as they tied the program record for the best 15 game start at 14-1, after defeating No. 47 Iowa and Lamar at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Sunday.
"I like doubleheaders because it gives us a chance to get physically fit and it's a mental challenge trying to stay focused for that long," head coach Jay Udwadia said. "Today, we played two really good teams and had to dig in both. We have a lot of respect for Iowa and Lamar and its good the guys get to compete in two tough matches."
The Cowboys continue to make history this season having now defeated nine ranked opponents, which ties the record for most victories against ranked foes since coach Udwadia took the helm.
With the 4-1 win against No. 47 Iowa and shutout vs. Lamar, the Pokes are 8-0 at home and have outscored their opponents, 43-7, in those matches.
MATCH ONE (vs. No. 47 Iowa)
With an early start this morning, the Cowboys started quickly in the doubles portion of the match. Pokes Tristan Meraut/Lucas Gerch wasted no time on court two as they defeated Iowa's Josh Silverstein/Dominic Patrick, 6-1, to put OSU one doubles win away from the precious point.
On courts one and three, Cowboy duos Arjun Kadhe/Julian Cash and Lukas Finzelberg/Jurence Mendoza found themselves in battles with both tandems tied at four apiece.
After they both won the next game to put them up 5-4, Finzelberg/Mendoza clinched the doubles point and gave the Cowboys a 1-0 lead heading into singles play with a 6-4 victory over Iowa's Nils Hallestrand/Robin Haden.
Gerch would put the Pokes up 2-0 in a hurry as he didn't surrender a game in his match on court three, winning, 6-0, 6-0.
"I felt really good in doubles and then came back and relaxed a little bit," Gerch said.
No. 125-ranked Mendoza followed Gerch's win with one of his own on court six. The sophomore dominated Iowa's Jake Jacoby, 6-2, 6-2, to give OSU a 3-0 lead and put the Cowboys one point away from winning the match.
After back-to-back victories from the Pokes, Iowa's Lefteris Theodorou put the Hawkeyes on the board with his straight-set win over No. 49-ranked Julian Cash, 6-3, 6-2.
All-American Arjun Kadhe quickly stopped the Hawkeye momentum as he won his match on court four, 6-3, 7-5, and closed out the Pokes' 4-1 victory.
MATCH TWO (vs. Lamar)
After a three hour intermission, the Cowboys played the second match of their doubleheader against Lamar.
Oklahoma State would have to come from behind in doubles with All-American duo and No. 9-ranked Arjun Kadhe/Julian Cash falling to Lamar's Michael Feucht/Benny Schweizer, 6-2, in the early stages.
On court three, Lukas Finzelberg/Jurence Mendoza answered the Cardinals win as the sophomore tandem made quick work of Lamar's Sebastian Santibanez/Jusso Laitinen, winning, 6-3.
With their No. 1 down, Tristan Meraut/Lucas Gerch continued to excel together as they completed the comeback surge for the Cowboys with a 6-4 victory over Jeandre Hoogenboezem/Nikita Lis to give OSU a 1-0 lead.
Finzelberg got the Pokes started in singles play with a dominant win against Hoogenboezem on court five, 6-3, 6-2. The sophomore remains undefeated in dual play this season at 10-0.
Gerch stayed hot and grabbed another point for the Cowboys with a straight-set victory over Lamar's Santibanez, 6-2, 6-2, to put the Pokes up 3-0.
"I started really well," Gerch said. "He kind of gave me the first game and it kind of blew open and I stayed aggressive. I didn't want to be too passive and it worked well for me today."
Then, All-American and No. 115-ranked Kadhe would clinch the fourth shutout of the season for the Cowboys as the junior defeated Lamar's Lis on court two, 7-6(5), 6-3.
Riding a 10-match winning streak, the Cowboys will travel to Mailbu, California to battle Pepperdine on March 19 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
